My friend's mother passed away, and in their family they consider the person "going to sleep." For the visitation at the funeral home, her mother was in a nightgown and robe, head on a pillow and draped with a quilt her grandmother had made. They did not use a coffin. I think there are a lot of different customs out there. This was the first time I had seen this. (They did not use the quilt in the final burial.) |
I don't know, but it seems to me that the divorcee should get a beautiful quilt signifying a new start. One to wrap up in when feeling blue and knowing someone cared enough to make it for her.

LOL I would think that a divorce is like any other milestone in ones life. I just attended our local guild meeting where Ellen Edith was the speaker, she is from No. California. She has taken events from her life and created quilts/wall hangings & just recently came out with a small book. She is a great speaker and had us laughing through out her lecture. Check out her website. It might give you some ideas on how to get started.

My mom decided that we (her children and grand-children) should paint her coffin when she's gone. When she told me about it she indicated that I MUST have a quilting pattern that would work. I can already imagine myself tagging Mom's coffin with a drunkard's path - coz I'll probably be drunk when I do it. So after THAT conversation, a divorce quilt is really not that far-fetched. :twisted:

You could ask for any shirts your neice has and rip them to put in the quilt or you could do a comfy quilt for her to comfort her in this time.

First quilt show I went to there was a divorce quilt on display, the woman had done an attic windows pattern and said the idea was that she was looking out on a new world for herself. I guess you wouldn't know that had been the theme unless you had been told.
So you can make a quilt and just call it her new beginnings quilt. |
