Does anyone know much about a Singer H74 sewing machine?
 

I have a wonderful workhorse of a machine, a Bernina, but it's heavy to tote/wheel around. :( This Singer is only 13# and seems to have many many stitches and several features that would make it easier to take to sewing groups, etc. Has anyone had this machine and what suggestions do you have-it's at Tuesday Morning right now for 200.00. Suggestions for other lighter weight ones? This groups is wonderful at answering all our questions and needs. Thanks.:o;)

I wouldn't buy a new Singer in that price range. Not sure about currently, but I know that non-vintage low-end Singers have a really bad rep for reliability, tension, etc.

A lot of people really like Janome for a take-to-class machine. They also weigh in at about 12 lbs. Here's a link to one in the Gem line:

I agree with Prism99, I definitely wouldn't buy a Singer in that price range, and truthfully I wouldn't buy a NEW Singer at all but would buy an OLD one. Janome and Brother both have a fairly good reputation, even in the low end range.

I have the Singer H74 i got at HSN it came with all kinds of extra sewing feet which was nice. but i paid over 500.00 for it. it works really nice for me but i am fairly new to sewing. i have had a few issues with tension but i think it was me with threading the machine?. i have tried to do Free Motion on it and that is really when i have had the tension trounbles it bunches up underneith. it is very light weight, i like the cut button and all the other stitches. if you are able to get it at 200 that is a Steal...

Thanks for the information. I appreciate the honesty. I really don't want to mess with tension problems. They did say this machine sold for 599.00, but is at Tues Morn for 199.00.

My guess is if you only want it for taking to classes or retreats it may be okay. But if it is at TM, then there may be a chance it was refurbished and put up for sale. I was at Big Lots once and saw Dyson vacuums, when I checked further they were refurbished returned units. Didn't buy it - just made me think twice when one sees a "great deal."

If you can take it home, try it out and return it if it doesn't perform to your standards then why not take a shot?

A guild member bought this machine but paid much more. It's nice. It runs very quiet and sews a perfect seam. She is very happy with it. She brings it to classes and workshops. She said it wasn't picky about thread and she has no tension problems at all.

I got a H74 for Christmas and didn't start using it until a month ago and it is awful. I can't get the tension right what ever I do. I can't return since I waited so long to start using it. I have e-mails and calls to Singer. I would not buy one unless you have a Singer Sewing Center close that can help on this. We bought ours through Tuesday Morning. I am going back to my $80 Janome and that is 100% better!
