I'm new to this forum but want you to know that when I Googled "BSR Skipped Stitches" yours is the site I went to. You are all probably sick of hearing "gritching" about the BSR but please let me vent...I'm about ready to throw the doggone thing into the trash (just kidding). I have printed off your suggestions regarding a stronger spring & am hiking over to my local store as soon as I fumble through this quilt. Nothing is more frustrating than sitting down to free hand and have skipped stitches..oh well...guess it will make me a stronger person in the end. Anyhoo, thank you for posting all the suggestions, tips, etc. I very much appreciate it.

I had mine in the shop last week and the repair guy, who hardly spoke English, had never hear of the spring problem. He kept saying that he "adjusted" and "updated" my BSR foot. I sat down with the machine, there at the shop, and showed them how it still skipped stitches. The owner of the shop told his repair person to order some springs. Seam he and a couple of the ladies at the shop had hear of this before, but not he repairman (I swear he was making fun of me like I did not know what I was talking about) The son of the owner used to do all the repairs, this other guy is new and I decided I don't like him.
Hope fully the spring will come in next week and I will have them put it on my foot!!!!

What stitch length do you have your machine set for? When doing free motion quilting we tend to move the fabric a little faster. If you have the stitch length set to a speed 2 or larger, the needle will stay up until is time to come down and it looks like it skipped a stitch. I recommend to try setting you speed at a 1.5 or even a little shorter. Of course, a new needle will not hurt.

I had the spring updated on my BSR but still have to really fiddle with all the other variables to keep the skipping away. For a regular quilt (just 100% cotton batting, cotton fabric top and bottom) I have to use a 90/14 Microtex needle and adjust the foot pressure. I tried using a smaller needle the other day and got skipped stitches right away. I have to put my foot pressure somewhere in the high 20's I think. Depends on my seam bulk but if you put it at 0 like the manual says, you'll get skipping.

It was frustrating at first because I couldn't figure out what the issue was. I thought it was supposed to be plug and play but that wasn't the case. It takes some tweaking and finding out what works best for different quilts.
