Donating Quilt Tops
 

Hi Everybody. :)

I would like to know if anyone is aware of a charity that accepts quilt tops. I have a few and would like to donate them to a good cause. I am making baby quilts to donate to Ronald McDonald House and am making purses and totes to possibly sell for some extra fabric cash. My DH has retired because of his cancer so we really are on a fixed income now. I could stop sewing to save money, but my DH won't hear of that because he knows how much I love it.


So if anyone has any information, I would greatly appreciate it if you would share it with me.

A lot of guilds take in everything from fabric to finished quilts for their charity work. We have about 4 groups we give quilts to and it all is based on the size. Our coordinator and helpers keep it all going. They bring packages of fabric, or cut pieces or tops or layered tops to the meetings or bees and we pick out what we want to work on. I give tops to a friend who quilts them and then we all jointly donate to the guild. Works out great.

I would contact your local quild(s) and let them know what you enjoy and whether they can hook you up. Or call around to your local quilt stores with the same question.

I do the charity quilts at our guild and I take top and even wips or ufos and finish them to donate. We give to wounded warriors, children & convalescent homes and many others. If you want to donate I'll pay the postage!

Also, check with your local Project Linus chapter (go to projectlinus.org for location). Most chapters have blanketeers who are willing to finish quilt tops that are donated. They also frequently have donated fabric for use. If you get involved with them, it will be rewarding for you and a win/win situation, especially if you can get help with some supplies.

Good suggestons about finding a local guild or Project Linus to donate quilt tops to. You could drop them off or maybe they could be picked up from you.

I also like to make tops to donate and used to mail them to out of town groups. Due to the increase in mailing costs I now donate the tops to my guild's charity group to finish. You should check out what sizes are needed. Right now my guild have plenty of baby tops to finish and requested some lap or twin size ones.

I've given a lot of unfinished projects to Lilrain. She'll ask for donations on General Chit Chat, I think in the past month she posted that if anyone had any unfinished quilt tops she would take them and finish them. She donates to many worthwhile charities. I've met her, she's a peach. You might PM her and ask if she would like them.

QOV takes quilt tops and pairs them with quilters for our soldiers.

Thank you for all of your replies. :) I think I will see if I can't find a local guild or Project Linus first. This gives me incentive to make more quilt tops that are larger than baby size. I really love the creativity of designing them.

There are a couple of good suggestions for your quilt tops. For those of us on a fixed limited budget and still want to do something for someone else, You can contact Downy "quilts for kids", they will supply quilt kits for you. It can keep you sewing. You can search online for a coordinator in your area, and email that person.

nhweaver beat me to it. Quilts of Valor and Quilts For Kids will supply you with the fabric to make the tops. That will help you with supplies. I just finished a string quilt for QOV. That was on my bucket list of quilts to try, so that is one more done. Look on the internet for local chapters. Our LQS has sew in's for both groups and it was a lot of fun to meet new people.
