adyldrop 08-30-2008 07:55 PM

there is a troll stealing peoples names on chat right now. please don't join! hopefully he'll be gone soon!

Jim's Gem 08-30-2008 08:01 PM

He was pretty annoying. How did he find our chat?

adyldrop 08-30-2008 08:10 PM

he's claiming it was stumbleupon. just an annoying lonely bugger.

Shadow Dancer 08-30-2008 08:13 PM

I'm heading out of chat, if my name is in there and saying offensive things, it is NOT me.

I have a log of the chat as well. Hope this person loses the site, this was a nightmare to say the least.

:)

Jim's Gem 08-30-2008 08:13 PM

I don't understand why people try to be so annoying. I guess he was enjoying himself acting like a Jr Higher.

ScubaK 08-30-2008 08:15 PM

I'm sorry I had to leave...
I think the person (s) were annoying to say the least.
Can't understand why we ,this board, has had such attacks of late.
Probably an angry child whose parent spends too much time on the board and on quilting....
ONLY KIDDING!!!!
But it is quite unnerving.
K

sewbusy 08-30-2008 08:31 PM

Very annoying to say the least. It was difficult to enjoy the company of our usual friends this evening with such a person on board, mean spirited and nasty.

Jim's Gem 08-30-2008 08:35 PM

Has this sort of thing happened much? This is the first chat room I have ever been on, and I've only been there a couple of times

genghis khan 08-30-2008 08:54 PM

what a mess i hope we are protected here other than this harassment

patricej 08-31-2008 12:02 AM

I'm sorry you guys got ambushed in chat. Also ... appologies to those who sent PMs asking for my help. I wasn't here and just read them a few minutes ago.

I don't have the ability to block users from the board or from chats. Admin can block users from the board ... i don't know if he can lock folks out of the chatroom. It would be difficult in any case because there are only the two of us, so we can't "work" the board 24/7.

the only two "solutions" i can think of are to either ignore intruders or for everyone to leave the chat. neither of those are helpful suggestions, though, are they? sorry.

idiots like the one who harrassed you last evening get their thrills from the horrified reactions of the people they're pestering. i have a feeling that if you fight the urge to respond ... just continue talking to each other as though you hadn't even noticed that "person" ... they'd get bored and go away.

if i find out there's another way to deal with them, i'll let you know.

Barb M 08-31-2008 02:01 AM

Patrice i wasnt in chat tonight, but i do know from my hd forum, when they've had a couple of intruders, the admin there was able to block the person from the forum and the chatroom, also, the hd chatroom the moderators can also temporarily blcock someone, but on my other forum, the admin uses the persons computer address? like ip address or something, and they can put a permanent block from that computer from coming onto the forum or the chatroom, hopefully, this forum and chat has the same features. Gee guys, that must have been unnerving to say the least

babeegirl 08-31-2008 05:14 AM

Do we have an "ignore" feature to where we can individually block the content of someone in chat? that way it never shows up on our screens?

edit: I just checked and there is not. We can hide the users box that's on the right side of the screen only.

beachlady 08-31-2008 05:42 AM

Wasn't on chat last night, but how does one steal your name? I read the post not to go on so didn't. Why does someone have to ruin the fun times of others? Do they have to register to be on chat?

quilter1962 08-31-2008 06:45 AM

I was in chat yesterday evening, this person was so vulgar to my friends I was really shocked at what he was saying.
I have never experienced anything like this before, it was more annoying than upsetting.
I feel for the person whose nick he was using, how is it possible to use someones nick?
I always log in but I am aware that not everyone does this. I am unable to access the chat room unless I log in.
Hopefully this nuisance won't return again.

This thread frightens me. I've heard all kinds of warnings about "putting yourself" out on the internet and have always felt very safe here. I can't even begin to imagine what it must have been like for those of you chatting.

It does lead me to some questions about the live chat feature, though, maybe there are some answers around. There have been times when I've logged into this site and a box pops up that says there is a live chat, click to join. I've never clicked it because I don't know how long the chat has been happening and have a thing about joining conversations I'm not part of. Do people come and go during the chat? Is there any way to know what time the chat started? (can you tell I've never been to a chat site?)
Also, I see mention of a log of the chat, is there a place to see chat logs?

adyldrop 08-31-2008 07:07 AM

a chat could be going on for awhile with many different users coming and going through out it. When someone new stops in everyone always says a greeting in welcome and catches them up to where the convo is. Don't feel like you are jumping into something you don't have any business in!! We love when others join us! It's a great way to get to know the members here! We don't get trolls there often at all. Please don't let that icky dope prevent you from coming and having fun with us!! :):):)

sewbusy 08-31-2008 08:01 AM

Yes Adyldrop you have put it all so nicely. Please jump in and join us anytime and you will be greeted warmly ....just let us know it's your first time and we will try to make you feel welcome. We don't get these creeps very often and when we have in the past they usually don't stay very long. We bore them real soon usually, this one was just wierd last night. We become an extended family in chat somewhat of a since of community, and know so much of each others joys and problems. Everyone is always concerned for each other. Give us a try.

b.zang 08-31-2008 08:05 AM

Will see you ladies in chat - too bad you had a troll but I'm glad to have asked my questions. TTYL

Cathe 08-31-2008 09:31 AM

Well, I hope she didn't use my name! I am never vulgar!

I did pop in to chat the other day, but I don't have much time online anymore - DH takes online college classes, so he needs the computer.

quiltingchic 08-31-2008 09:54 AM

My Daughters boyfriend is visiting this weekend he is a IT guy and said admin can block his ip# he could not help but said it would not be hard for admin to do it if he comes back on. He said this can happen but once his ip# is detected lol we can stop him lol

Cordelia 08-31-2008 01:13 PM

I HOPE my name wasn't used in chat! I was not present in chat on the 30th.

If my name was there and anything was said, it wasn't me!

when my daughter was away at school she and her room mate got ananymous calls from someone who kept calling them. finally one of them said to him 'does your mother know what you're doing? she would be so ashamed of you." believe it or not, he never called back. sometimes you have to remind people that what they do is cowardly and shameful. no man wants to be thought of as a coward.

kpc 08-31-2008 03:19 PM

Sorry that this has happened on such a wonderful site. I haven't been on today and just read about this.

Flying_V_Goddess 08-31-2008 05:08 PM

This kind of scares me. I've gotten a couple messages on my Windows Live Messenger from different random people asking me to go to some dirty website usually involving a web cam. Its like spam you'd get in your Junk Email, but more personal. I can't figure out how they're sending me this crap 'cause I don't give out my personal info to anyone...unless they're a friend or someone on here made a fabric offer to me. And blocking doesn't make it stop because its from a different email address each time. So this whole thing going on with chat doesn't make me too comfortable at all.

And whoever is pulling off this BS on chat disgusts me. Its utterly shameful that some creep cowering behind a computer screen with nothing better to do would harass the nice people of this board and get kicks out of getting horrified reactions from them.

Carol W 09-01-2008 06:53 AM

What a sad sad person they must be to have to behave in such a way.

I was not on chat that night, but it must make for a extremely unpleasant chat.
