Hi Everyone,
I wanted to incorporate the following block into a quilt I am doing but it means I would have to make it much smaller. I wanted to use these as the 4 corners on the outer border on a quilt (Thimbleberries - Saw Tooth Nine Patch). Do you think this is possible??? Here's the block I want to use: http://www.quilterscache.com/C/Carpe...uareBlock.html |
What do you want to downsize it to?
You could leave off the two outside rows - that would bring it down to a 7 inch block. It's designed as an 11 inch block. |
I would shrink it... draw it to scale, then shrink it on a photocopier until it gets to the size you want.
Easier to draw it in EQ and then print out a 7" block, but I'm at work and EQ is at home. :-) Someone else may be able to whip it up for you. |
The other blocks in the pattern are only 6-1/2. I just thought an 11 inch block in each corner (hence, an 11" border) was a bit much.... May I should wait to assemble the rest of it and then see what it looks like?
Do others use blocks in a quilt based on the name of the block for sentimetal reasons or am I reading WAY too much into this....lol? |

I like blocks that have names with meaning, but then I'm a bit soppy sometimes! LOL
It still has to look good though, the name isn't everything. ;-) EQ can print a block of any dimension you tell it to. And that way there's no math involved, or errors. The reason I would shrink rather than removing a layer or two is that it can change the whole appearance of a block if you start taking bits off. Having said that, depending on the measurements you may end up with some odd bits, like having to cut strips at 1 6/8" or something silly. I know some people avoid too small fractions, they're hard to get right. |
Are the blocks "finishing" at 6 1/2 or 6 inches?
|
Once the top is assembled, the blocks will be 6". I don't think it will look bad if they were a little bigger, but I thought 11" was a bit much...

Go www.thequiltedsnail.com and scroll down on right side - there is a link to calculating how to reduce or enlarge a pattern.
