I have seen a few quilt shows about hand dyeing your own fabric. What kind/type of fabric do you use and what is needed to dye the fabric? Where can you buy the stuff needed to dye? Like if you want to do a type of dying that you do in your microwave. And how do you do it?

Check the dye packets in your favorite store. I get mine at Walmart and they carry three brand............just read and go for it.....check the shaving cream method posted. I think in resources

I know you can use instant mashed potatos to dye with as well....actually it is kinda scary if you think on it too much! But it gives great results!

Moonpi....I saw it done on Carol Duvalls show. i haven't had the opportunity to do it yet....that and it just seemed wrong that a food on the grocery shelves could have such effect. Will check my notebook for the details, but might be able to find on the net if you search her site.

You can also mottle your own fabric. Take a spray bottle and put regular bleash in it. Lay a piece of fabric in your bathtub, (or outside on a piece of plastic if it's big), and spray with the bleach. You can have it in a mist setting or more of a stream, your choice. Check fabric after 30 - 45 seconds, if happy with the look, rinse in cold water, you can then wash it if desired, and then dry.

Some fabrics you will need to let the bleach set for longer, just keep checking. Black will not become gray, but orange.

I just started looking into dying my own fabric also. One of the companys I found was at www.prochemical.com. I ordered the cataloge. Hope to get some soon and give it a try. it sounds real fun. I'm going to start with setacolor. I saw it on simply quilts and I just knew I had to try it.
