I have tried to dye some dye fabric with black . All i am getting is a very deep purple. I have used procion dyes in black . I did everything as directions any ideas why. Oh soaked in dye for 24hours.

is the dye powder old?
some blacks do look like deep purple it takes a LOT of dye powder for black are you using soda ash they have a dye called "better black" at dharma trading i never tried black for that reason, it's easier to buy it |
Yeah, if you want a solid black you may be better off just buying yardage.
Better Black from Dharma does a GREAT job. You *do* have to use a lot though. Like if standard dye is 2 tbs, Better Black is 8 tbs. |
And, you may have tried to dye too much fabric with too little dye. If all the dye molecules are used up, there's no more available to stick to the fabric!
|
ditto to rebecca.
use more dye to achieve a deeper color black requires 4 times as much dye compared to other procion dye colors. |
you might want to first pre-treat your fabric, then more dye color will be absorbed.
|
I'd try doing it again (double dyeing) in order to get the intensity you want. If it is too 'thin' it will show up as navy or dark purple instead of black.
|
I have never had good luck with black, hard color to get true color, and found that it fades easily.
|
What kind of fabric are you using?

Thank you everyone I think iy may have been too weak although I did use a complete container just slightly less than directions so i did decide do have a go twice.
Been to quilting class Angie quilts and bought some black . When I was doing the dyeing it was because I could not go any where to buy. THANK YOU |
