Some of us did a mystery table runner and are now working on a mystery tote. They are really fun and if you dont like them, they are small and you arent out much anyway! I was always like you and afraid to committ to one but these are fun!!

I've done several mystery quilts & I always have fun with them! The first (& 2nd, come to think of it) one I did was in a class at the Road to California quilt conference, with Debbie Caffrey. I've done a couple online ones too. Pick colors you like, use good contrast, and take the leap!! :D

I made one Mystery Quilt. It was on-line from a West Coast quilt shop, directions for each step/row posted the first of each month. What really made it special was that two neighbor quilting friends also did it. It was great fun comparing notes, asking if others had checked the newest instructions, comparing quilts that turned out so differently in spite of being from the same instructions. Fun memories (only from last year).
I'd certainly recommend them, and I'd do it again. It's kind of like working a jigsaw puzzle without looking at the picture first.

I've seen mystery quilts that were really nice but when I spend that much money, I like to know what I'm making......like buying a pig in a poke!

I did an online Mystery quilt recently. The good thing was I was excited to get each clue and work just on that part. The other good thing was that I learned a lot of techniques I had not been exposed to before. The bad thing is that I was horrified at the results. I think partly it was my fabric choices, mixing scraps with new fabrics. I haven't even finished it because I can't figure out how to do it. Then, I showed it to my artistic son and he liked it, so now I have to finish it. But, I have until November to do so!

I did the Orange Crush Mystery quilt from Quiltville.com with a bunch of quilters here over the last few months. I am happy with the results in mine, but found it to be a very busy design. If I had my time back I would have changed some of the colours.. but then thats all part of the mystery. I still have all the blocks to sew into rows. I think I might make that one of my projects to work on over this upcoming long weekend. I also have to make a couple of doll patterns for an upcoming doll swap here in this forum.

Quiltville is offering another mystery starting this weekend, and I believe there are a few of us doing that one too. They are alot of fun to make. I would love to design one of my own and host a mystery here. I think I might make that one of my goals for 2009:)

Like Aggie I was one who also did the Orange Crush Mystery quilt. I loved everything about it. I learned alot of new blocks and hints that are helping me with my other quilting. I'm doing the mystery tote and this labor day weekend will start on the next quiltville mystery quilt.

It's a good way to use up alot of scraps. The orange crush quilt I made I called it the Mystery of Memories. It has alot of scraps from quilts I have made for my daughters and granddaughters, and from scraps from when my mom quilted and made clothes for me and my girls. You can make it very special by doing this and its fun.

Come on and join us

I don't have an answer but I loved what you said about liking it inside your box. I have to force my self out of the cardboard sometimes too.
