I was in Walmart this morning in the dressing room so I heard the saleslady outside the door talking to someone. She said that because they had had so many people griping about not having the fabric department, they had decided to put them back in. I asked her if that was true, she said they are putting it in right now and I should go back and see it. Sure enough, the department they took out about three years ago is being put back in. Much to the delight to the women who were working there. I guess the squeaking wheel gets the grease. Well done ladies.

Grandma Janice..I heard the same thing from the associate at our Wallys...they are still up and running but there have been rumors they were going to do away with the fabric dept. She said people were calling the 800 # to complain and it kept them open..so if any of you want yours back or don't want them to close it...call and voice your opinion..their toll free # is 1-800-walmart..I call to complain about the lack of cashiers alot of times...especially at the holidays or on the days of the month when people get their SS checks. It seems like you stand in line for a long time at our Wallys..the self check out ones always goof up on me so I won't use them at all...they are a pain to me..or maybe it's me? NAH..couldn't be me *L*

That is Great news for you... I was at walmart on Monday and picked up some white muslin for a small quilt I'm working on. And the Lady that helped me was Soooooo helpful!

Wish they would come back to my closest store.

Power of the People!

mimom 03-24-2011 01:03 PM

I wish they would do that at our Walmart (Macomb, MI)

i think the stores carry what sells the best in their neighborhood or what people ask for. our local store mixes paint where the larger store about 5 miles away does not. i'm going to be calling the 800# to ask for the fabric department to come back.

They are even installing a cutting table and I saw some of the big bolts of material they are putting in.

We've always had fabric at our old, small WM but now they have more and some of it is really nice. I got some Disney fabric to finish a quilt for a grandson and it was $5 something which I didn't think was bad since I didn't have to drive 30 miles. Next time I go to the Super WM I'll check to see if they have it back again.

WOW!!!! They took out the fabric department before I could really start using it. Back then I was a new quilter (I still think of myself that way...); and I couldn't tell how to 'pick' good fabric from cheap fabric. It's taken me a while to be able to look and feel it, to see what seems good. It doesn't seem to matter if I'm at an LQS or Joannes.... there's always some fabric I'm leary of and some fabrics that seem alright to me.

A elderly lady who quilted for years, gave me a plastic bag of odds and ends of fabrics. Some of it was vintage.... and the fabric was much denser, only about 34" wide, seemed stiffer (prob. the sizing). It was noticably heavier than the LQS materials I had purchased. Almost seemed like home dec type, but had Cranston and Blank printed on the selvedges.

I will check out walmart to see if they have (in my particular store) these denser, heavier type of cottons. Since I do a lot of wall quilts and table runners, the medium weights are good for me too. I'm still learning!

Keeping my fingers crossed that the one near me will restore the fabric department!

SherriB 03-24-2011 04:17 PM

Yeah!! I hope lots more Walmarts will bring their fabric dept. back.

GagaSmith 03-24-2011 04:17 PM

Ours has a fabric dept and always has had but it is never staffed. The last three times i wanted fabric cut my DH or i had to go looking for someone to help me. We waited 20 minutes or more each time. There are always people waiting before i get there or more come while i am waiting for help.
