Hello I'm new to this board and was hoping somebody here could help me. I'm a guy and not much of a quilter but I'm looking for so fabric to do a quilt for my girlfriend for Christmas. She loves bear hunting and am looking for I guess its called cheater fabric. I have looked at every fabric store in northern MN with no luck. I have searched the internet for weeks as well. I have found one already completed but I wanted a certain backing for the quilt and I guess to do around the blocks myself. I added a link to the completed quilt to show the fabric. There are many other panels available, but they include other wildlife critters - deer, moose, turkeys, foxes.

I didn't come across that particular fabric, but did find these pillow panels - the squares would be a bit larger than the ones in the eBay quilt.

These were bears only.

I'd think in your neck of the woods that they would have something for you there.

Justin--how nice of you. I think the quilt you are looking at started as a panel print. They are like framed pictures.

These are made by Wilmington fabrics and have three lines--bear mountain, bear meadow and bear river. You could also call Grubers in St Cloud and Hingeley Road in Floodwood (if you haven't already) and ask them if they can find something for you.

I have stopped in Floodwood. That's where I found the backing I want. My mother told me there was some fabric where the panels like that already come on a piece of fabric fully made and you just need to cut to length and then you quilt around the lines as desired. I don't know I guess but is that true or not?

fabric.com has some nice bear panels and backing fabrics at very reasonable prices.

If you Google "bear quilt" you'll find some pretty amazing, already completed quilts out there if you don't want to make it yourself. Even amazon.com has some for sale, completed. If you add up the cost of the batting, backing fabric, front panel fabric, not to mention thread and the time and experience needed to complete the quilt it might be an option for you.

jnelson - I think it is very sweet of you to make this for your girlfriend, and if it were me, I'd treasure it even more if it came from your hands. It seems you've received lots of replies re: fabric. I'd like to address your questions about assembling the quilt. If you like the cheater fabric as is, then you can certainly leave it that way, layer it with backing and batting and quilt it. However, if you end up with something that you think is too small, you can add 4 strips of fabric to the outside edges of the panel to make borders. If the individual bear blocks need something, you can cut them apart, sew strips of fabric around each block (this is called sashing), then sew the blocks together. There are no rules, it's simply what YOU think looks best.
