Fabric Moritorium Challenge

The idea of this moritorium is to clear out your stash and save money.
It will also clear out some space in your sewing area and you may discover treasures you forgot you had.

The rules are simple: No new fabric purchases until November 2012.
You can buy:
batting
backing and/or binding
fabric - if NOTHING in you stash will work. (Consider trading with a friend)
thread and notions
fabric purchased on a plan (example - block of the month)

Some can do variations such as only 3 months, or a GREAT sale.
Anyone can join.

Come on and clear out some of that stash and make room for great new fabrics next year.

I just got back from Mary Jo's ... I knew a few months ago I would get to go while visiting family for the holidays . I need to do this ! My suitcase could hardly be lifted!

Gramie bj 01-01-2012 09:48 AM

I'm in but not sure how I'm going to do, Sew Expo is comming in March and my Quilt buddie and I have plans for some weekend trips this summer. I have to get my stash under control!! I'm tired of having to run all over the house to see if I have something that will work, and moving an pawing through all these bins is just not working for me. I have an old china hutch, 5 shelves 5 foot long, and some wall cabnets, 4 shelves 6 foot long full to. would like to get it worked down to just them. Oh ya and I hav 2 LG chest drawers upstairs in guest room I'd like to get empty of fabric too. I WILL NOT BUY FABRIC, WILL NOT BUY FABRICK, NOT BUY FABRIC, BUY FABRIC,---wait a min. let me try that again!!!!! LOL well I will try.

AUQuilter 01-01-2012 11:48 AM

I am in. Clearing out the UFOs (especially the ones for ME), cutting up stash pieces with Accuquilt membership I bought in 2011, and getting the stash under control. Fortunately, I have a nice setup and space (according to some) but when I can't find a tool, a pattern, or a project,... Well let me just say again, I am in.

nhweaver 01-01-2012 12:26 PM

For me, I would like to add,

Buy fabric, notions, quilt books, rulers, only if I have sold, donated, traded, regifted the same quanity of fabric, notions, quilt books, rulers. I would like to have 4 free (forgiveness) passes when I fall off the sewing pile and the UPS/FEDEX/USPS angel leaves packages on the side porch (internet junkie). If I can add these, I will join the moritorium challenge.

I tried this last year at the request of my son.
I lasted the 6 mos; but immediately went to one of my favorite shops and spent $400+ - defeated the whole purpose.

luvstoquilt 01-01-2012 01:06 PM

I would do this but I know of a sale that is happening soon in Yorkville. 2 ladies have closed their shop and they have a lot of fabric at $2 a yard...I don't know about the rest of you but I simply cannot resist! They told me it would be sometime after the 1st of this year and promised to e-mail me. I will forward it when I get it if anyone is interested.

Caroline S 01-01-2012 01:07 PM

No NEW fabric until I have used up all of my accumulated scraps for scrappy quilts. BUT, that does not includes thrift store fabrics. Last year I paid an average of $1.00 per yard for my thrift store finds. The one other resolution was NO MORE VINTAGE SEWING MACHINES. Well that resolution just got shot down big time. My DD called my last night to say the Mother of a friend of hers has a White Family Rotary Sewing machine for sale with all the original attachements, manual and the purchase receipt of July 24, 1918. AAARG, fabric is easier to store (hide?) than sewing machines. DD is such a great enabler.

ckcowl 01-01-2012 01:52 PM

i'm in- i have so many ufo's to finish up- and stacks of fabrics/projects i really have no excuse to shop- and this is the year i would really like to do some upgrades on my machines & other things- in order to do that i need to not (waste) my money on things i do not need- no matter how good a sale might look-...i might have to start out buying some solid black though- it is for a quilt back- and i will get enough extra to cover what i need for my star backgrounds i'm doing for the Carol Doak (50 paper pieced stars) beyond needing solid black i should be able to make it till November for this :)
i am starting the new year on such a Positive Note :)

raedar63 01-01-2012 02:06 PM

I will try! I am to the point I have so much I am overwhelmed, it is mostly scraps so I need to get them sorted and organized. Then sew, sew, sew!

ksdot417 01-01-2012 02:17 PM

I'd love to say I could do that - but I know myself only too well. I just have no will power when it comes to fabric. Most of the time I just try to stay out of the quilt shops. Once I'm in the door all bets are off.

lots2do 01-01-2012 02:17 PM

I'm in with a few free passes as well. I'm planning to separate my stash soon into a "for me" pile, for family gifts pile and for charity pile. Want to make some pillowcases for some nursing homes with the pretty fabrics I've picked up on sale here and there. I have two or three baby quilts to make.
My very supportive husband has been asking questions like " when you buy, do you have a project in mind?" a few times lately. It would be great to get some fabrics cleared out.
My problem has been finding the time to sew. I love it when I allow myself to but with work, am often too tired to cut with a rotary cutter at night or to sew a straightish line.
:)lots2do

What is an AccuQuilt Membership? I recently purchased a Go!

SouthPStitches 01-01-2012 02:59 PM

I'll try but may have to go through a 10 step program to detox from fabric shopping

Quiltaddict 01-01-2012 03:00 PM

I could use just my stash with no new fabrics and still not use it up for at least 50 years. And who could go that long with buying new fabric. No me.

MOBRIDGE MOM 01-01-2012 03:02 PM

I'm also in. Have several projects ready to go and several that just need a little tweaking and will be ready for the quilter.

lfstamper 01-01-2012 03:07 PM

Lori S I totally understand Mary Jo's. nhweaver I like your adds. I too will try for 2012. Kateyb thanks for the challenge!

pattypurple 01-01-2012 03:34 PM

I'm going to try again this year. Last year I made it till Feb. I've just spent 1 1/2 wks. cleaning my sewing room. Found fabric I don't even remember buying. I have enough kits and UFOs that I could sew all year just to get them done (and that doesn't leave any time to sew purses for my craft shows). I'm almost embarrassed at the amount of fabric I have.
JUST BECAUSE IT'S ON SALE DOESN'T MEAN I HAVE TO BUY IT!!!!!!!!

katsewnsew 01-01-2012 03:43 PM

You lost me on the first rule! No new fabric until November 2012!
Last year I tried it, and I lasted 3 days.
BUT I did pull out my 3 large boxes of UFOs and started working on 2 of them.
Hoping I can keep at it all year.

cheaha39 01-01-2012 03:43 PM

My quilting friends and I are trying to get healthy, walking and watching what we eat. We are not buying fabric until we loose some weight. For each 5 pounds an individual looses, as a reward, she can and will buy $25.00 of fabric.

I like that idea too!!

I'm in, I don't know if I can last but I am going to try to follow all the rules

jaciqltznok 01-01-2012 07:31 PM

to QUIT buying fabric is harder than to quit smoking!
I am really going to try...but with so many shops closing, it is going to be hard!

quilterella 01-02-2012 01:13 AM

I was in last year's Moritorium and did quite well. I purchased batting twice and fabric for a friend once, and some from a fellow board member to complete a quilt(which still isn't finished) once. Even though my stash took a terrible hit last year, I am joining again, because I still have alot of stash. I will have to buy batting and thread at some point, but otherwise will try to honour the Moritorium. Good Luck Everyone.

Quantum Leap 01-02-2012 03:24 AM

Im in like others dont know if I can do it and I know I will have to get batting at some stage as well but I will do my very best to follow the rules :)

Short an Sweet 01-02-2012 05:16 AM

do u turn down fabric that is given to u? when I go visit my ex husbands aunt she wants to give me half of her fabric, Ive told her I dont need it but i dont want to hurt her feelings

coldquilter 01-02-2012 05:22 AM

I was already thinking along these lines anyway as my sewing room is going to explode if I don't do something about it soon. I have 1 top almost assembled already since Christmas just using up "stash" stuff. Not sure what I will do with the quilt but it looks better in quilt form than fabric. I can't wait to hear how everyone does.

Kehoeta 01-02-2012 05:33 AM

I so want to join in on this... but I'm afraid that I am still in the honeymoon stages of quilting... Only been doing this about a year.... and even though I have inherited so much fabric from my MIL and friends, I don't want to give up roaming the quilt shops yet. SO - here is what I can do... I will organize my stash into a way more usable state - and I will use some stash fabric for every single piece I make in 2012. Maybe even all of my backs...

nycquilter 01-02-2012 06:27 AM

I, too, am in. I have already finished two quilts this year!! woo hoo. They were done on the 31st except for binding. One was from my scrap bin (the front) with a pieced backing, all from my stash. The other is a Halloween quilt, all from the stash. Now, I'm working on finishing a top that is a UFO, a top that I"ve appliqued all the blocks and it needed me to dye a piece for the sashing (done yesterday), and a kit (who knows when/where it was acquired???) that is also a UFO. Then, maybe, I can make something new? but from the stash. Then, back to the UFO's.

QuiltnNan 01-02-2012 07:01 AM

i'm in on this, also. my daughter gave me a gift card to a local fabric shop for Christmas. i'm going to try to use that for batting, though.

thanneaKS 01-02-2012 07:20 AM

I'm in, but it's going to hurt!!!! I need to stick to a better budget anyway, as my sub teaching jobs are thinning out and I simply don't want to add schools. Lots of retirees are getting first dibs, so I've decided to make it work on a more limited budget. Kicking the fabric habit will help--I've got enough fabric for two years' worth of clothing items and at least 10 quilts!!!!!

deedum 01-02-2012 07:22 AM

I am in. Although thru November is a long long time for I might exercise the "Some can do variations such as only 3 months, or a GREAT sale."

Also, I may join in if I may on loosing 5 lbs, I can pay myself $25 for my stash fund. that should encourage me, but I fell down the stairs last nite, head first. oak does not move, so exercising is out for a few days! Too sore to go shopping, but I had planned on this year being very frugal and just working out of my stash. So yesterday I put together a tumble quilt, I don't have any fabric for the border! So I will put that back and wait for the right fabric to appear. Seriously I am budgeting myself for the new year. So I AM IN!

#1piecemaker 01-02-2012 07:26 AM

I need to make this promise since I am destashing anyway. It would help. But, ohhhhhhhh, its so hard. Almost as hard as going on a diet!

I am with you Jacquie. I am also trying to quit smoking. I WILL!! My reward will be to keep track of the $$$$ I will be saving and use the $$$ for LQS fabric. My reward for success. I hope that doesn't disqualify me from the moratorium.

sewmary 01-02-2012 07:58 AM

I am in! I made my last purchase for a quilt for my sister on Dec 30 - I have no traditional fabrics so had to buy all. The ladies all laughed at my resolution and are sure i will be back.

On the way out I spied a gorgeous batik that I am dying to have. I will use that for my losing weight reward since it has been made clear to me I HAVE to lose weight and get in shape. (I thought quitting smoking was easier than losing weight!)

nena 01-02-2012 08:07 AM

I went into withdraw just reading this.

judy363905 01-02-2012 09:46 AM

I am in.. I started working on stash in October and was amazed that what I had on hand, that fit my needs. Also, working on my batting supply...I really think I will have enough thread for 4 - 6 months....will use fabric groups on had for Sulbug BOM Calendar Quilt ...Looking forward to a fun 2012

Judy in Phx

katiebear1 01-02-2012 09:47 AM

I'm in. Except I am going to visit my DD and SIL in may and we are going to the big quilt show in Denver while I am there. So I get one free pass . Okay? :)

QuiltnLady1 01-02-2012 03:17 PM

I am in -- except for using the gift card from DH (that is free $$ -- right???). I will save it for something I can't live without :). Do rotary blades count as notions?
