Fabric Organization with the Boards
 

I know this has been discussed but have a question relating to this.

I've started putting my yardage fabric on the boards but not sure what to do with the smaller fabrics.

Scraps will go into scrap drawers by color.

But what can be suggested for "less than a yard" fabrics. I don't buy FQs much anymore unless it's for a specific project then they would go into project containers.

Do any of you use smaller boards for less than a yard? If so, what size do you cut them?

Any ideas is appreciated.

I've just been folding the smaller pieces, then stacking on another shelf. If the small piece matches a larger piece (on a board), I drape it over the top of the larger one.

I put 1/2 yd cuts and up on the magazine size boards. I don't cut the boards at all. And I stack them by color so I can see what I have at a glance. Everything less than 1/2 yd is folded to the size of a fat quarter and is placed along with the fat quarters I have. It's easy to tell what is a fat quarter and what isn't, those larger than a fat quarter are larger. Works for me.

I seperate all my less than a yard by color group and then fold and 'stand-on-edge' in a plastic drawer. Have them all sorted by color, perhaps a couple colors together, and if so, will put a note on the front of the drawer, Yellow, orange and purple. Have like a whole drawer of white and black and blue....Got these drawers at Walmart, you can buy them one at a time and they stack/nest together, mine are as deep as my closet, so no wasted space. Everything over one yard gets wrapped on a board and put on my shelves....when I do that I started pre-measuring the pieces and then after I wrapped them used a small piece of paper to put size on, and any other information I had, such as, washed, not washed, bleeds, very expensive, very cheap....if I used only a piece, would subtract from the total....has worked for me.

This is what I do with my FQs and anything less than 1 yard. I fold them all until they are uniform size and then store them in my white plastic drawer thingy. Attached is a picture. Ignore how messy the drawers look. This was taken when I was re organizing my fabrics and I am too lazy to take another picture. All the drawers are filled nicely now. I have everything separated. 30's, batiks, holidays, and everything else. The everything else category is arranged by colors as are the batiks.

I'm in the process of folding my fabric on comic boards and I plan on folding anything less than a yard - 2 per board. That way I still have it with the folded yardage but can easily tell it's smaller than a yard. I've also been putting the yardage on very small colorful post-its and sticking it in the same place on each board. That way I'm not marking on the boards and I can see the yardage at a glance.

What kind of 'boards' are you using? Comic boards? Or MILate's boards?

I guess if you use comic boards or something similar, you can fold the fabric so it is only 3.5" wide then you can wrap two fabrics on one board.

I use the boards that MILates sells here on QB and she sells small boards that are perhaps 5X4 and perfect for FQ's or even smaller sizes.

I cut the foam boards 4x6.5 inches then wrap the fabric less than one yard. I bought a shelving unit for DVD's at a yard sale and they hold them beautifully.

Seeing your smaller boards reminds me of the cards/boards that trim comes on. I wonder if Hancock's, etc. throw those away? Hmmm, might be worth asking!!
