I am trying to organize my fabric - what would you do with a fabric piece that is is shape?? I am debating about squaring it up - -OR cutting it into stripes OR -HELP

The piece measures approx 35" tall x 25" in the middle

I have a box that I put all my scraps in and then go back and cut them when needed just fold them and try to remember what you have .................

I keep my scraps in the shape they are in - but then, I do paper piecing and use a lot of odd shaped pieces.

I'd say to fold it as is until you find the project you'll be using it in. You never know if little bits would be just what you need until the time comes.

Also, my first few years of playing in fabric, I didn't applique. Now that I do, there are considerably smaller pieces that would really work for me. If you're not interested in dealing with the pieces under a specific measurement and sincerely doubt you'll change your mind later on or have no interest in learning other techniques, then by all means, cut it into some pieces that fit your needs and hang on to the tiny scraps for a quilty friend or local quilt charity. Someone will make good use of what's leftover. Happy organizing!

What I would do is just straighten up the piece and cut that extension off the top and see whether I could cut a 3" or a 2.5" or a 2" square out of the part I cut off. I have special containers for those sizes. I would just then put the larger piece back into my 'blue' fabric drawer.

When I have a piece of scrap like this, I usually cut it down to a fat quarter. Then with the remainder, I stick it aside for applique or for a hand pieced tied quilt.

As an art quilter, I never know what size will be needed so I leave scraps as is, just fold and put away. However, how neat are you? does it bother you to have unsquare material? What works best for you is what is best.

I might cut off the "tail" so the rest of the piece is easier to fold.

Other than that, I would leave the piece "as is" until I had a use for it.

I'd fold it and put it on my top shelf.

The top shelf of my cabinet is smaller pieces (fat quarters, slightly smaller pieces and 2 1/2" strips). The next shelf has larger amounts that stand on their sides. The next shelf has material on bolts laying on their sides. The bottom shelf has flannels.

i leave all scraps at the size/shape they are. never know whether i'd need the length or width for something.

I agree I don' cut a single scrap until I know the project I will be making.

Handcraftsbyjen 03-08-2012 01:50 PM

I'd leave it until I knew which project I was going to use it for.

joyce888 03-08-2012 02:38 PM

I wouldn't cut it if it were me. That's big enough to use in another project.

I always trim my scarps to the closest size, square, strip , ect but something like this I put in a LG scrap basket. I have several of these baskets and my lg scraps are sorted by color, you never know when you will need an odd shaped cut for something.

I make mostly planned scrappies and would never cut or trim a scrap until it gets small enough to only cut a 2 1/2 in square or a HST.

I tend to leave scraps in large pieces if around 1/8 yd or more and fold them into my FQ pile. The smaller stuff gets cut down to the largest usable sizes and bagged. When I get too much that I can't use, I donate the cut sizes to our community quilt program so they get used.

Fold it but don't cut until you need it
