Fabric

A fabric website is having a nice (but brief) sale on cotton fabrics. This website is aimed more at general sewing (garments, home decor) than at quilting, so I'm not sure what fabrics to consider. Would cotton shirting be best for ordinary quilting? I assume pique and lawn would be too light.

!00% cotton quilter's cotton is what you should buy for quilting.

Most quilters use 100% cotton, but you can use any fabric you want. I would make sure they were all the same weight and color fast

Buy what makes you happy, but know what you're buying and treat it accordingly. If the quilting police come to take you away, I'll give you an alibi ;)

I know, but sometimes a girl just needs a little something more in her stash...

I don't plan to "make a quilt" with other kinds of cotton. I just need more variety for some sampler quilt-alongs that I'm doing. If I get something that doesn't work, everyone will get pincushions for Christmas!

I believe "cotton broadcloth" is the stuff we use.

broadcloth is heavier than the quilting cotton you may normally use-
shirtings are ok- but a lighter weight than 'regular quilting cottons-
all are usable---often if the cotton fabric is lighter weight than what we want you only have to add a lightweight interfacing to make it work. broadclothes have a *rougher* finish than the regular cottons but are fine for quilting. most any fabrics are usable- the only real thing to consider is that everything you use in a project can be cared for the same---as in- you don't want to mix fabrics that must be drycleaned with fabrics that get tossed into the washer.
