If I were to embellish a cotton quilt with some fancy braid trim, will it hold up in the wash? I believe most of the pretty ones are rayon.

I'm making a quilt for my granddaughter that I have pretty mermaid fabric for (Schmash & Sons, not Disney Mermaid). It's kind of busy, and I was thinking of "framing" each square and trimming the frame with braid to make it more of a focal point. I kind of have the "looking thru a porthole out onto the mermaids" thoughts in my head.

Now I'm really I'm glad I asked! I don't want to do it if it can't hold up in the wash. I really wanted to make this as a quilt, rather than a wallhanging, so I'll keep thinking about it until I come up with something suitable.

If you are using sequins, yes, do a wallhanging like Loretta suggested unless it's going to be something that isn't going to get used. You could use ric-rac and sew that on. That would work fine on a quilt.

Love your fabric. I don't think the fancy trim will work on a kids quilt. My grand daughters needs washed often. She takes it everywhere. I made her two different ones so one can be washed and the other one used.

Have you thought about making the quilt and then just a small wallhanging with the embellishments to match?

Bias trim, like the Clover brand makes for stained glass quilts, might be an option. You would still need to sew it on. In addition to basic black, metallics are available. I bought mine from ebay ages ago. You might be able to use regular bias binding - make an experimental block and go with what works best.

I guess I could try samples with ric-rac, bias or maybe piping. I do like the idea about a matching wallhanging (it would have to be small, but will keep it in mind). Thanks for the ideas! I think I'll go browse on ebay too.

I used all kinds of trims on a quilt I made years ago, but they were all made of cotton. I used eyelet ruffle, braid, cotton lace and rickrack, and I didn't have a problem.. just made sure they're all cotton.
