do any of you have a favorite that you use over and over...I tend to be drawn to the log cabin I have'nt ever made one yet but I love the design of it ...very simple and yet to me a cozy looking quilt....
|
My mom loves a log cabin quilt, she took a sew as you go quilt class using that pattern a long while ago, and has now also does the variant - heart of my cabin quilt. She tells me she'll never do a quilt the old way again.
Me? We'll I'm so new the wonders of sewing machine quilting that I can't help but be inspired by every pattern that skirts my way! |

My favorite, go-to block is a pinwheel star. I love it! And you can tweak and play with it and it makes lots of other blocks too.
one example. |
BJ~ I love that pattern! Just the other week someone was telling me they would NEVER try a pinwheel, but really your pattern is bias square triangles. Not a big deal really, and just like you said making those exact squares and turing them different ways gets you an ohio star! Well I suppose not your's is three colors and an ohio star is only two, but your pinwheel is simply lovely all the same, thank you for sharing.

Bj the star is also my favorite patern My first quilt was this the one in my avitar and my second and the one I have cut out. It is sew easy.

The log cabin is a great pattern cause there are so many ways to set them and get different looks. I have only made one but plan on making another only different. here is the link to the one i did

I have been quilting only less than two years. The Beginning class I took used Yellow Brick Road pattern by Terry Atkinson. I have used that pattern several times since for a baby quilt and a tablecloth. It is so easy and showcases your fabrics so well. It has instructions for baby up to Queen sizes and is designed for fat quarters. It is a great way to use of scraps or your stash. One of the teachers at my LQS writes about this pattern on her blog at:
www.theCalicoHorse.com Enjoy! |
I love log cabin.
|
I like to do a different pattern every time - I always learn something new!
|
Since I'm so new to quilting, I like to try different block patterns for every quilt I make. Funny how it seems that each block I work on is my "favorite". I always gravitate towards stars of some sort though.
|
I love log cabin as well, but my all-time favorite block is the Ohio Star. It's another one that can look so different, depending on your fabrics and how you set it. For some reason, this particular pattern rings my chimes, even though I've never been to Ohio! I have yet to make one, though!
|
I love doing Irish Chains. I don't know why...i just do! :)
|
My favorite is still the first one I ever did, Blackford's Beauty. Just something about that block than enchants me. Its a lot of fun to get the top out I started with last year, make a few more and compare my progress.
|
I'm with you, Sandpat.....love trying new blocks and they are always my favorite when I'm doing them. I tend to try a really difficult pattern (for a beginner) for projects that involve just a few blocks or to provide to a charitable organization. I know that i have plenty of time, I'm adding new tricks to my repetior, and they stand out from other blocks.
|
Log cabins are so versatile, and chains of all sorts for pieced favorites. I also love appliqued baskets and flowers, and quilts that tell stories or contain a lot of symbolism.
|
My favorites is the Churn Dash (aka something else) and the Court House Steps...
Don't have any samples but those are my favorites. K |
well bj that is one beautiful quilt and for you other gals that posted fav. that have finished quilts are they posted in the picture board so we can see them?....I am looking up the ones that you guys listed that I'm not familiar with like the Ohio Star Irish chains and blackfords beauty....I am so new to quilting that I just can't look at enough patterns I swear I am at the quilters cache so much just looking at all those quilt patterns....

I find myself going back to the disappearing 9-patch for something quick but not too simple-looking. There's a lot you can do with it depending on fabric selection.

I love the friendship star pattern.
Have a wonderful evening. |
If I could have just one block, it would be Drunkard's Path. It can turn into Wonder of the World, Rocky Road to Dublin, Solomon's Puzzle, Dirty Windows, Fool's Puzzle, Love Ring, Mohawk Trail, and dozens more by simple path rotation and color choices. Here are some from Marti Mitchell. http://www.frommarti.com/dpgrids.html My avatar also combines Drunkar's Path and strip piecing.

I just love the 9 patch, so many different things to do with it. :-)
|
I'd have to say my favorite is Ohio Star... no wait a minute - Churn Dash... hang on - it's Pinwheel... but I do like Friendship Star - - - ok, ok my favorit pattern is the Log Cabin... :) - I just can't decide - maybe that's why I like sampler quilts so much!! :)
