Just getting back into quilting I need to buy rulers. I have a 12 1/2" square one and a 6 x 24 ruler. What rulers do you have and use regularly and consider essential?

I really like the 6 1/2 inch square up, it comes in mighty handy and is inexpensive!
6x24 is my most used ruler

I love the June Taylor Shape Cut Ruler, the biggest you can afford the better!
It cuts strips, squares, triangles and diamonds so easily in mass quanities. Kind of like chain stitching. My teacher at my quilt shop had me use it on my borders and I loved it so much I went out and bought 2. Here is a demo of the product: http://www.junetailor.com/shapecutvideo.htm |
my newest favorite is the olfa frosted 6x12
a joy to use, plus it's a real multi-tasker. the angle lines radiate from the center so it works as a strip cutter, for triangles, diamond, and other shapes, and as a "square in a square" ruler. |
I agree with the ones others have mentioned and the other one I have been using alot is my 2 1/2" square.
I use a lot my 9 1/2 square too.

You already have my two most used rulers.
Everyone has already listed the rulers I use the most!
I like the 6 1/2 inch ruler too. I also love my 6 2/1 inch by 24 inch too!
i mostly use my 6x24 and my 9 1/2 square up ruler, those two i could not do without
One other thing to consider is sticking with the same brand - as the way the rulers are marked can make the inches appear to measure differently. I learned that the hard way on my first quilt project - and after reading Harriet Hargrave's description of rulers in the Quilter's Academy it suddenly made sense.
Cheers, K |
the rulers mentioned so far are great rulers, I love mine
I also love my 3 x 18 and 4 x 14, off the top of my head I think that is the length.
I did just order the June Tailor Shape and Cut Plus ruler from their website. Cutting strips accurately always drives me crazy, so this tool will be wonderful for me!

I have a ton of rulers but my favorites are the 6 1/2" square & the 6 1/2" x 24". Use them the most. Also have a 12 1/2" square for squaring up bigger blocks. If I would of known this when I first started quilting I could of saved alot of money! LOL
The rulers I use most are 4x8, 6.5x6.5,3x18. I also use my 2.5x2.5 to square up mini blocks.
My June Tailor shape and cut ruler arrived today. I just ordered it the day before yesterday from their website. Can't wait to try it out!

Lucky girl! I ordered the JT Shape Cut Pro on June 2 and it was out of stock. Called today and it is in and being shipped today. I ordered thru Shoppers Rule. |
I always have to be different. I really like the 8 1/2" x 24" Omnigrip better than the 6" x 24".
Got my shape cut at Jo-Ann's today with a 50% coupon. Had to go to 2 stores as the first one did not know what I was talking about.
Weezie can I come live with you? I need to add to my "collection" and would love to do that by proxy.
By the way, I have a new ruler I just love. A Creative Grid 4 1/2 x 12 inch. It fits right in with the 12 1/2 and 6 1/2 inch square ones. If it counts, my husband cut me a couple acrylic templates (2 1/2 inch square and 2 5/8 inch) because I found this book on making quilts you can frame. (The lines on the gridded ruler sqares just kept confusing my eyes and I couldn't see the pattern on the fabric well.) I guess 26 years of training the man has paid off.
