I have a feather bed I want to get rid of or what can I use the feathers for without getting them all over the house?

Any politicians around? Got a load of tar to go with those feathers?
Sorry, that was bad, but I couldn't resist. |

I love them!! Can't imagine giving one up - ours went up in a fire years ago. Gram used to sew (baste) a new casing around the edge - shake the feathers into the new casing and restitch - same with feather pillows then resew a doubled over edge. I don't know what else to do but they are so cushy and cozy.

Awesome!
I'm not sure what you would like to make, but what if you cut a small hole and then use a clean shop vac to suck some out and then blow it into a different bag? Sounds good in theory!

Dunster! LOL LOL LOL!!!

I think if I didn't want it anymore, I might offer it for sale here in the buy, sell, trade section. Can't imagine what I would do with all those feathers either. Because no matter what I did, I would end up with a great big mess. (Doing anything creative with it is probably not for me - I'd sell it or trade it I guess.)

Buy pillow ticking and make pillows. I love feather pillows, and they wash up very easily.
|
Snuggle up for a good nights sleep.
you could make feather pillows. I love my feather pillow to sleep on. I have one my mothr make for me when I was small. |
I put the two we had in our camper to make the beds softer and get a better nights sleep.
|
I agree with the feather pillows. My grandparents had feather beds and my Mother and Grandmother made pillows. My daughter still has one that is probably 50+ years. I am violently allergic to feathers so I do not have one.

What ever you do, do NOT try to burn them. It will stink up the whole neighborhood. Not nice. Yes, dad was up to it again. Go buy a lined vest pattern, then trace around it on the bed. Shake some of the feathers into that area, but don't over fill. Double sew where you traced so you can cut off what you won't use. Quilt this area. with about a 4-6 inch grid. Now cut your shell (outer part). Assemble the vest by following the directions on the pattern. It does not matter how hard you try, you will get feathers everywhere. Imagine the people that work in the down rooms that sit there all day filling baffles. I had to fill in once. I came out looking like a poorly plucked chicken. Oh, wear a face mask. Feathers up the nose are not nice either.

Sorry, that was bad, but I couldn't resist. Seriously, make feather pillows or "stuffing" for decor pillows |
Do you want to sell it?

Do you want to sell the feather mattress?
|
this thread reminds me of the Lucy episode where she decides to re-cover Ethyl's ratty looking furniture, piles up all the feathers on the kitchen table, Fred decides it's hot in the room, and turns on a fan LOL

You all crack me up. My feather story is one to really remember. I had one of those feather beds and some of the quilting had come loose and it no longer useful. I had a hole in the middle ;) I wanted to do something with the feathers since I am a thrifty type. I made some pillows and took the feather bed, my scisors, a few pins, and the new pillow thingys into the shower (dry of course). I shut the shower door and took off all of my clothes and threw them over the door. (I wouldn't want the feathers to stick to my clothes.) LOL.. anyone who knows me would gasp at this as nobody should ever see this sight. I transfered the feathers from the matress topper to the pillows I had made and then pinned them shut. I cleaned up the few leftover feathers from the shower and sewed the pillows shut. I then was able to get dressed again. LOL Lucky I was home alone. Actually this worked out very well because it contained the feathers in the shower area and not all over the house.

Sandwich it and tie it in a quilt? Would that work??
|
You could always make some down comforters.

I know when I have worked with feathers when sewing some Frostline kits many years ago, they had you put the feathers in the freezer before working with them and that kept them from going everywhere....but it would be really hard to put a whole mattress in the freezer!!

I remember going to great grandma's house and slept in her feather bed, it was so soft and comfy, she died at 101.
|
All my pillows are made from the feather bed I slept on growing up on the farm. They are messy to make but worth the mess.
|
LOVE IT!!!!

Are you aware that feather comforters wash very nicely in a washing machine, and dry very nicely in a dryer! They fluff up beautifully but take two dryer cycles long.
Ps They look terrible all squashed when you take them out of the washer, but fluff up in the dryer to be like new! J Truly feathers wash well - haven't you ever seen a bird taking a bath? It is funny, us and them take baths....who else do you know that does? |
