Is there enough information in either of these to make it worth purchasing for a singer 301 owner? I think these are by David McCallum.

I really like the featherweight book by Nancy Srebro Johnson. It is good and has saved me service calls when I got bobbin thread hung behind the bobbin case. Hint: always stop with the thread carrier in the high position. :) I recommend it highly for the featherweight. Don't know how helpful it would be for a 301.

Nancy's book wouldn't be good for the 301. In fact, I didn't find it helpful except for the history part for the featherweight. All her tips and tricks were left out of the new edition on purpose! Why would she do that? What about us people who are just buying her book? Why should we have to buy the old version as well? Just stupid in my opinion. I have just briefly looked at the David's book. I will probably break down and get it and the DVD at our quilt guild show. He comes every year. Nice guy and his wife went to highschool with my mom and aunt! Small world.

Absolutely. Without a doubt. Unequivocally. Get the book and the DVD. I have two copies of the book and while that was not a plan, it happened. Have designated one as my "working" copy. I make notes, comments, etc. in it and if it gets grease or lubricant on it so be it. The other is my library copy in case the working copy becomes too "used". Did I say absolutely get Dave's book and DVD?

My featherweight was sewing great and then just slowed down to a crawl. crawl some more, etc...

She deserves another chance. I have the early Johnson Sebro book.
I think it suggested to run the machine in high speed until the lube loosens up, 10 minutes or more. Akk, can that be right?

I have Dave's book and DVD. Execellent for the DIY FW or 301 owner.

Any bit of thread or lint can get behind the bobbin case and jam it up, recommend unthreading unthreading, removing bobbin case, throat plate, looking for any lint or thread. Lubricate/oil if you didn't before starting to use (after 5 years!).

Running it full out applies after you fill the motor grease cups of they were dry. Once the lubricant (Singer Grease only) starts getting down into the motor you can hear it get smoother. (usually less than 5 minutes)

Nova Montgomery has an excellent FW class if you get the chance to attend one. I go to her site if I have a problem with my FW.
