More than once I have had to go to my backup machine, so you are smart to have one available. Often I have had regular thread in one machine and monofilament in the other. It will also give you a machine to carry to classes. Also, I don't like to take my primary machine out of the house. I teach 4Hers and having a second machine set up in my sewing room works for me. (Would you believe that I have an 11-year-old student who quilts 10 stitches to an inch? All I do is draw her a line. She's a natural, puts me to shame!)
My husband accidentally dropped my secondary machine once and although it is scarred, it was repaired satisfactorily.

I don't know what kind of machine you have, mine is a cheap model Brother, he has a switch on the back that you toggle over to drop the feed dogs. If you have your instruction book, it should tell you. I have also heard you can put tape on the feed dogs.

:?: :( I have another question I just got a new Singer Ingenuity and my feed dog button is STUCK What do I Do now?? Any one got an idea??

a drop of oil may do the trick, otherwise call the place where you bought it. I have a Brother and mine is really hard to push over.

I have the ingenuity and mine messes up, the button moves but the feed dogs don't . I just keep doing it over and over. and it will catch. I've had it in the shop twice because the bobbin case jumps out of place and the needle hits it. Other than that I really like it. LOL
