I've done it accidentally -

put wool in very hot water - agitate for a long time -
put in very cold water -
dry in a very hot dryer

guaranteed to shrink your fabric

I've done it on purpose both with yardage and with sweaters. Felted wool is beautiful, soft and thick, and felted sweaters can be made into wonderful stuffed toys and pin cushions. I did it a bit differently than you did though...soak first, regular agitation, checking several times, low temp dryer only if more felting is desired, pressing to stabilize the fabric, etc.
