is a fence rail just four strips and two directions? how many borders would you do? I guess i need to research this......

It can be more strips. As long as your strips are a long and the whole of them together is wide. I made one with 6 strips. I have seen them with 3.

My first rail fence was three rails and turned in two directions.

It is often 3 strips, but basically it's a strip set, cut and turned 90 degrees to each other. Actually, i think it's called 'rail fence' if you do a search...

I've done one with 3 and five, I like the look of the one with three better

I make them with what ever number works for the size blocks I am wanting to create.... I'm sure there is a "proper" and "correct" way.... but I don't follow thr rules very well..
