Friends suggested I "quilt" borders around a piece of embroidered work I have finally finished (it is the Irish Blessing). The piece is 18x16; the borders add an addition 4" on each side. I do not want to quilt inside the embroidered work. Do I simply put a backing on, no batting and then do some stitching on the borders? Bat only the borders? If I put batting on the whole piece, how to secure the embroidered part? Would appreciate some input!

Hello there & welcome to the quilting
board from the state of Washington. So glad to have you join us. I am currently working on a quilt top, that I have embroidered on. I plan to tie it with embroidery thread. Maybe that would work for you too!! :D Post some pictures of your projects when you can. :D :D :D :D :D |
I have made many embroidered pieces into quilts and wallhangings. I have finished them in several ways. From my experience, if you put batting and quilt the border, the embroidered center tends to puff a little and sometimes a lot. The only way I have prevented this is by stretching the whole thing on stretcher bars to hang it up or to frame it with no glass. When I defiitely want to hang it as a quilt without a frame, I them quilt over the embroidered with invisible nylon thread and use a very light quilting pattern like large stipples or something like that.
Please take a look on my web site to see a few finished pieces. http://maria-quilted-treasures.com/index.html Maria |
Thanks for the information. I didn't think of using invisible thread on the embroidered section. I think that will work just fine, as I did want to use batting. Now I can get to this project. My, these boards are great!
