First Quilt Block!

1 Attachment(s)
I just figured id share my very first quilt block:

A friend of mine offered to show me how to quilt. I THOUGHT she'd start me on something small and simple. nope she threw me head first into paper piecing! She picked out the colors and pre cut these strips for me, and helped me sew the first square or so... and i did the rest. It's pretty interesting. I have to wonder how the first quilter came up with the concept of "lets sew strips of fabric at certain angles, make a cube and then sew those together and get a blanket!" Hehehe i'm going to hopefully have more sewing "dates" and coutinue it. if im lucky i might get it done before Christmas and i guess i will give it to my mother. :) (so she can put it on the couch) i assume its going to be lap sized as thats her favorite size to do. it didnt occur to me to ask. :D

Fantastic! What a great friend to share this wonderful hobby with you! Keep going!

Dina 10-31-2012 03:55 PM

Wow! That is beautiful. I have never paper pieced. Maybe that should be next for me? Hmmmm, may need to find someone local to help me though. :)

It is so pretty. I love it. Be careful, you will get addicted.

QuiltnNan 10-31-2012 04:04 PM

congrats... it turned out quite well

Tartan 10-31-2012 04:26 PM

Great block but regular piecing is easier I think than paper piecing. If you survived your first block, the next should be easier.

running1 10-31-2012 05:38 PM

Looks pretty!! Have fun!!

HillCountryGal 10-31-2012 05:46 PM

Great fun!
Be careful, I'm learning this quilting stuff can be pretty addicting!

batikmystique 10-31-2012 06:00 PM

Congrats on a great first block! Paper piecing is fun and it almost guarantees perfect piecing each time. Your colors are lovely...please post a photo when your quilt is complete. :o

akisan 10-31-2012 06:05 PM

You will now be forever addicted my dear just like the rest if us.

lisalovesquilting 10-31-2012 06:14 PM

That block will make a gorgeous quilt. Good job, and welcome.

I'm learning paper piecing and loving it. It's so precise. I love that about it. It's great that your friend is helping you so much by cutting the pieces of fabric to help you. She's really wants you to quilt badly. Keep going. Sew those pieces together and finish the block. You'll be happy when it's done. Really pretty fabric you chose. And I like the pattern also. So, I'm learning paper piecing just like you. It's different than regular piecing. It twisted my brain until my mentor sent me a DVD on how to paper piece. Then I bought a 1/2" ruler and picked up a postcard and now it's so much easier with the tips I have learned. I taped the postcard to the ruler like Carol Doak's does in her DVD and I'm really working faster that way. It's actually fun when you get the tips and tricks to it. Good luck! Check out Carol Doak's. She might have something on YouTube that would help you. Some tips or tricks or something.

That was my first paper pieced block too! Not my first quilting block though-your friend must be a really good teacher, and you are a natural! For anyone who is interested on Craftsy, Peggy Martin teaches this and many others in her strip paper piecing class. She is a really good teacher and the class is definitely worth it!!

Kittywolf13 10-31-2012 07:04 PM

Thanks for all the kind comments! It's a lot of fun! I was a bit apprehensive about quilting at first because I know there's a lot of measuring and precesion involved. Both of which are not my strong suit. But yes my friend is a really good teacher and very eager to show me. She had everything planned out and it was wonderful! I need to read the instructions cut some more strips and maybe work on the next block. If not just get the prep work for our next sewing date. :) she asked me if I minded doing a holiday quilt and the. Showed me some stuff and picked out that after I ok'ed it. I think their lovely too. It can go with the dark green around the pin wheel too. But I like how the cream makes it pop. Might make some blocks with the green and some with the cream. :)

Congratulations! It's beautiful!

joyce888 11-01-2012 05:29 AM

Looks like your on your way! You have a wonderful friend and teaching you to sew a pp block is probably a very good idea. Your still sewing straight lines and learning about joining seams.

Kittywolf13 11-01-2012 10:16 AM

Thank you do much! This is so encouraging. I wish I had more time. I want to sew and not be at work. (or prepping for my art convention in eeeek! Two weeks!!) maybe after convention I'll have more time to work on projects.

MimiBug123 11-01-2012 10:34 AM

lfstamper 11-01-2012 04:46 PM

Very pretty! Nothing like starting with something so beautiful to make you love paper piecing!

Kittywolf13 11-01-2012 07:03 PM

oddly enough, i never told her i liked pinwheels... but pinwheels have been my favorite in my limited quilt knowledge! they just look so festive and complex but remind you of well pinwheels which are simple and fun!
