First Sewing Machine for Little Girl
 

Ok, well with Mommy ramping up her sewing lately teaching myself how to quilt, my Daughter is now really wanting to learn as well. I took some of my quilting scraps and let her make a little pillow for her stuffed animal and stuffed it with cotton balls. :p She was soooo excited to be sewing and wanted to make more and more. Her Birthday and of course Christmas is coming up and I'm wondering about buying her her own little sewing machine. I know they have toy ones, but I want something that she can actually make stuff on that won't break and actually has replacement parts for. She is turning 6 in a couple weeks.
Does anyone have ANY advice for this first sewing machine from her?
I saw that Singer Pixie ($50) and it was cute, but I see it has horrible reviews on Amazon. Someone mentioned a cheep one made by Brother that they love. ??

probly any small walmart brother would work.

There are some seriously cute machines out there that I swear were made with little girls in mind. I agree about getting a Brother from Walmart. Their prices are very reasonable. They have a pretty decent selection in the stores but also online - you can do a ship to store or to your home. I'd avoid the ones that are the Sew Mini's... you would want something for her to grow in to and those small ones are too dinky to do much with.
She'll love the Xmas present - and if you get it in time to make her a nice dust cover to suit her personality and likes I bet she'll be absolutely thrilled... you could give her the dust cover in one box and when she looks all confused over what it is you could then give her the "big" present....

I got my grandaughter (age 6) a Janome (I think it was around $100, not the Sew mini) and it is a great little machine. She made pillowcases for her aunt's wedding gift and loves to sew. Not really so much making anything right now, but she loves playing with the stitches and explaining to anyone who will listen all the safety rules and all the features of the machine. Just wished I lived closer so we could sew more often (Mom is too busy right now and needs some lessons as well).

I would advise against getting a 'toy' machine and get a small 'real' machine.

I bought my 5 yr old granddaughter a Brother sewing machine at a yard sale for $20. I didn't want to replacing batteries and checking wires on a toy one all the time. She does sew on it but when she was 'helping' sew patches together for a quilt for her cousin, my nephew-to-be, I left her use my machine. It has a seam guide I can set for her to place the edge of the fabric against and I can set it r e a l slow. I have this feeling she will want to use GRammy's machine more often.

This is a Hello Kitty machine made by Janome I bought for both my grandaughters, it is a real sewing machine, they love them. This is a good price for one. I think I paid under $100 for each of theirs. I have seen new ones at Janome sewing centers but don't know what they charge.

I gave my bernett to a 10 yr old and its very loved and apreciated it was around 170.

There is a Mini Janome that Hancock Fabrics sells. Usually in the ads for ~$40. A couple of months ago, they had them for $28 - I bought 6!!!! I gifted most of them and the leftover is my backup travel machine. My regular back up machine is the same model that I have had now for 6 years. I have had absolutely no issues with it. I have used on several people to initiate them into our world bahwaahhhhh (evil laugh here).

This is listed as a sale from of $49 - but it is usually around this 'sale' price. Watch for the sales and sometimes they are ran as a manager's special. Just a great little machine

I purchased a Janome Harmony for my 5yo DGD which stays at my house. My dealer recommended it and said to stay away from the Minis. It was $89 and came with a package of accessories (including several different feet).

I am also teaching my 7yo DGS to sew.

Both of them can do a better 1/4" stitch than I can!! LOL
