Does anyone use the fiskers cutters? I have the 45 and the olfa 18. It seems to me that I go through more blade on the fiskers than I do on the olfa. Sometimes I use the small olfa more than the 45. It seems like I sometimes don't have to cut very much fabric and it seems to be dull already. Are the blades better for the olfa than the fiskers?
What is your opion? Or do I seem to be getting bad blades when I bbuy them? |
I have had my fiskars for years and haven't had any problems. I haven't tried anything else.
|
i use the same blades in all of my cutters, but my fiskers cutter hasn't held up as well as the olfa.
|
I have used the fiskars for 5 years but recently bought an olfa. I love it! The fiskars has a problem with the screw coming loose after using only a few times. I constantly have to keep tightening it. I was afraid of cutting myself so I decided to try the olfa and it's wonderful. And I also bought a blade sharpener so I can reuse the dull blades. Both rotary cutters are the same size, 45.
|
I never noticed that before, I'll have to pay attention! Thanks for the heads up!

I have had problems with the screw loosening also. I just keep checking it all the time while using it. One thing I have noticed when people use their cutters, is that they push their cut piece of fabric to the side after cutting, scraping it along the cutting mat. This will over time create flat spots on your blade. Then they wonder why it doesn't cut completely across next time. Also remember to close your cutter after each use. Even one drop on the floor (which I have done) will damage your BRAND NEW BLADE.

Don't know where the Fiskars cutters are made but their scissors are made in China. Not much is made in the USA amy more is it? No wonder our economy is in the ditch.
|
I have had a fiskars 45MM cutter for years and the screw never loosens on its own. Maybe yours is newer than mine and they made them differently. Blades last a long time. I resharpen blades also.

I have the screw loosening problem also! Can be a real pain.
Might be time to think about a new cutter! |
I love my fiskers.. have had it 7 years.. never had a problem.. I thought of changing but WHY... it isn't acting up and I could buy fabric instead of a cutter.
|
I have a Martelli cutter and like it much more than Olfa or Fiskars, I have tried them all.
|
I never heard of a Martelli so I googled it. I sure like the looks of it. Very sensible design. I wonder, do they use the same 45 blades? The sharpener isn't cheap but it pays in the long run.

I have a Fiskars cutter. It goes through blades pretty fast but I'm pretty sure that is because I cut like a drunk and run into my ruler! The screw has loosened a few times, but it's never been a problem.
|
I only have Fiskars, so I cannot compare them with anything else. However, I like mine a lot. The blades seem to do well in it.
|
I have a rotary in every brand. My favorite is the Martelli. I keep all of them in a drawer under the cutting table and which ever one I pick up is the one I use. Recently I tried the "turn your blade over and add a drop of oil". It worked great. Made the blade last twice as long.
|
I have the Fiskars and like the feel of the handle in my hand and it's really easy to use. My screw does come undone, but it doesn't bother me.

the blades DO last a long time, but if you are not careful on your cutting they do bend, which makes a kink. Martelli blades are NOT interchangeable with the others.
I go through about 2 blades a year. |
Maybe the "kink" of the blade is common to all rotary cutters??? I seem to have trouble getting a straight cut on a long strip. It's probably just me, but that was another reason I thought I would change from the fiskars to Olfa. So far I haven't had to tighten the screw on the Olfa but my straight cut is only slightly improved.... it's probably just me. Short arms or poor coordination, maybe both. lolol

I've used Fiskars for many years. I recieved an Olfa for Christmas and love it. I just like the way it feels in my hand.
|
I have a Fiskars but I've never used it and probably can't find it :-D . Otherwise, I've just used Olfa and I like them pretty well.
|
I have fiskers I want to keep track of this thread for my next purches.
|
I use a Fiskar's cutter, I haven't had any issues with it other than slicing my forearm open a bit. (Didn't bleed on anything important).

Oh, I'm glad you are all right and didn't bleed on anything. ;) |
Well, Chasing Hawk's fingers probably needed to be trimmed anyway.
|
I had a Fiskars cutter for over 20 years, and never had a problem. I lost it last year, and had to get a new one, Fiskars again. Well, this weekend was cutting a quilt- the cutter broke! Something inside that I can't fix; the blade won't lock into place. Only a few months old, and I had to get a new one. They sure don't make things the way they used to. Now I really want to find the old one- I'm pretty sure its in the house, lost in the clutter.
|
I agree with both of the Fiskers problems that you mentioned. My blades dull much too quickly, and I am constantly having to tighten the screw. Am thinking of switching back to Olfa. Did not know that these were common problems!
|
We have a Fiskers paper cutter that seems always to be dull. I like my Olfa rotary cutter. I also have a Gingher, which is do not like.
|
I've used both Olfa & Fiskars. I always liked the handle grip of the Fiskar more, but one of mine did seem to loosen up also ... ?
I bought the Martelli cutter a year or so ago and I REALLY like it !! I recommend it to everyone, it's all I use now. All the others sit in the drawer :) |
I have had a Fiskers, Olfa, a Martelli and a Gingher - they're like fishing lures... you never know which one you will like best!
Anyway I always go back to the 45mm Olfa with snap back retractable blade. I always end up leaving my blade locked open and with the Olfa - when you relase the handle the blade snaps in. It's the only one we carry at my LQS and recomend it to new quilters. |
i use a sharpener its well worth the money, i havnt bought a new blade scince i got it,

I've never used the Fiskars cutter and only used an Olfa when I didn't have mine handy. I use a curved handle Quilters Rule cutter or one of the old brown Dritz cutters (mine are both 20 years or older!). I did try Fiskars blades and found that they really dull quickly, so I only use Olfa blades which last a long time and can be sharpened well. I would like to have a 60mm cutter, tho.

I have both and prefer my Friskers, however it is getting harder and harder to find replacement blades. I love my Friskers 12 1/2 in square ruler, but chipped a corner on it and would love to find another one. I haven't been on line yet to check there.

For those of you who use the olfa cutters, do you like/or use the duluxe cutter or just the original cutter better?
|
I think the cutting mat has a lot to do with the blades getting dull. When I use a certain brand I am always changing blades. I have both Fiskars and Olfa

I have a small olfa and the larger one... I don't like the little one very much. But I love the bigger one. I am going to change my office into a sewing room so this is a good conversation for me to listen to. :D |
