Flannel backing
 

I have seen others ask about flannel backing and a lot of the response is that the user likes it, prewashes and dries it and that you should not buy cheap flannel. I bought some for a quilt and washed and dryed it but got alot of fuzz balls. I paid $11.98 a yard from Fabrics. com. Is that cheap flannel or does all flannel do that after being washed? If I purchased cheap flannel about what would the price be for good flannel per yard?

At that price, it should be good flannel. when they tlak about the cheap stuff, it is usually along the lines of the 3.95 stuff at Joanne's or wherever.

I have purchased good flannel at my LQS (around $10.00/yd) and you can defintiely feel the difference. It is thicker and washes well.

If I were you, I would complain to the palplace you got it from and see what they say.

The pilling or not pilling qualities of cotton flannel is one of the mysteries of the universe. The same forces are at work in flannel clothing and flannel bedding. You get 100% cotton flannel that washes beautifully and wears and wears and some that pills almost immediately. Sheets? Same.

on the fabric.com web site when you click on a fabric with the description it also gives you care instructions-
was it a wide flannel (108")?
i've been shopping with them for over 10 years & have never seen a flannel at that price except the extra wide ones-
the single sided flannels do tend to pill- unless you treat them kind of gently at first-
the double sided flannels are the ones that do not pill as much- the actual price is not the issue- the quality of the fabric is- you can get good quality at $5 a yard & you can get good value at $10 a yard-
if you bought the 108" wide flannel from them (which would make sense at that price) the ones i've bought were single sided- i wash them with cold water (gently) then dry them in a hot dryer- if you take it out & give it a good shake most of the (fuzzies) should come right off- or you can contact them & they will either replace it or exchange it- they have very good customer service. all the years i've shopped with them only once did i get a flannel that kind of did that- the (lint balls) were not little like pilling though- it was fairly large pieces of lint- they did come off with a shake (pilling doesn't- you kind of have to shave it) and it was because it was a loose weave, single sided flannel-
but if you are unhappy --- call them- they will make it right

One of my "issues" with many of the backing fabrics listed On Fabric.com is they don't tell the manufacture... If I don't know who made it .. I assume its because it nothing to be proud of.

I recently bought some nice flannel, at . . . (drum roll, please) . . . WALMART! It's called "Super Flannel." It's thicker than the cheap stuff (doesn't cost much more, though) and is really nice! :shock:

I was lucky enough to get some Moda marbles flannel...the only one I've ever used...and it was AWESOME. Had a great hand and washed up beautifully. For what you paid, I'd expect the same. I got mine for about 1/2 that in Lancaster, PA. I would look at manufacturers and, at this point, probably by nothing but moda flannel. Delicious!
