I got a bunch of 5" flannel squares. I don't think the fabric was washed before they cut them.
Knowing how much flannel can shrink...should I piece the top & quilt it ...then wash it????????

What's your thought on this..

Put it in water and let it soak. Put the dark with dark. Not only is flannel famous for shrinking, it bleeds a lot! You can try drying it in the dryer. Put it in an old pillow case or laundry bag, it helps with the shredding.

Thank you!!

How do you want your quilt to look in the end? If you get enough squares to use or can get some more unwashed of the same kind of flannel, go ahead and piece it, then wash it. Remember that the quilt will look wrinkled and old (I love that look)but it will still be cozy and warm. Just add extra rows if you need it certain size at the end. If you want it to remain somewhat unwrinkled, then wash it first. You can put them in a garment bag and just soak and spin, don't agitate. This will reduce the fraying. It may still fray a bit, but not much.

There is no right or wrong, just different results depending on what you decide to do.

Also will you be mixing it with other fabrics ? If all you are using is the unwashed flannel it will all shrink at the same rate, but if you are using other fabric with it then you have to be more careful

Thank you, Maride
I love the look of flannel.
I've always washed first since they shrink differently.

They sent enough for a top.

But I may add some cotton to the mix. I like the the different textures together.

So Thanks to all of you.....I'm soaking first.
