Fleece as batting?

When I asked a question on here recently about finding inexpensive sources of batting for practice pieces, someone suggested fleece, and I was lucky enough to find a large piece that cost very little. I tried it yesterday, and was amazed at how well it worked - tension perfect, stitches good. So could fleece be used in a "proper" quilt? Is there any reason why not?

Oh good, because I have a source of very inexpensive but reasonable quality fleece! It also has the advantage of making colours other than white, cream and black potentially available. I wouldn't use it for a precious quilt, but for those that don't matter so much, it could be useful - the cost of batting in the UK is breath-taking. I think I may try it for one of my tops and make sure it washes OK etc.

fleece makes a wonderful batting! very warm, easy to stitch- nice/loft-coziness factor :) go for it!

I love to use fleece for the very reasons you discovered. I also use flannel (sometimes multiple layers). You never have to worry about how close to quilt or shifting batting.:)

This is such good news! I'm going back to the shop that has the cheap fleece next week, and will be stocking up!

I have used the fleece for the backing and not used any batting at all. I made 2 quilts for my grandson's that way and they love them. Even their dad, my son, loves to cuddly in the quilts with the boys. They always tell me how comfy the quilts are.

I agree that all the reasons mentioned for using fleece as batting are god ones, especially not having to worry about closely to quilt or its shifting.
