Ok I did something stupid - I was purchasing some items from fabric.com and needed to spend a little more in order to get free shipping so I bought 1/4 yard of something called "Floorcloth". I want to make some pretty kitchen or hand towels with it. Has anyone ever used this?

I may be wrong but I think it is more the wt of canvas. Put cloth over it or paint on it and use it for a rug.

I got some of that too. Just wait till you wash it!!! I haven't figured out what I will do with it, but someday it will get used.

I thought it was used to make rugs.

Did it get really soft when you washed it? I have a lovely piece of cotton fabric I could use for a nice trim on a handtowel maybe I'll try it that.

The description said that it can be used for toweling.

I was curious, so I went to fabric.com - the fabric you ordered is toweling. Probably similar to homespun. It is loosly woven, 90% cotton & 10% polyester, so it will shrink as it didn't say pre-shrunk. I would think you can make towels from toweling. It's 19" wide, selvedge on both long sides. All you would need to do is cut the length you want and finish the short edges as desired, i.e., fringe, hem or whatever.

No, mine came out a stiff, wrinkled mess, frayed terrible and very linty. Yuck! is all I can say!!! Might make good place mats.

Oh :-( Maybe I will use it for dusting rags then.

It may leave more dust than it picks up.

Good way to look at it!

grann of 6 12-06-2010 04:26 AM

Let me tell you, my DDIL makes floorcloths and this stuff from fabric.com is NOT floorcloth material. I don't know where they got that term but I sure wouldn't want to walk on it. Again, maybe placemats. Hmmmm......another idea

hmmmm, then i wonder what this stuff is. this sounds interesting. i wonder if you can really walk on it?

vjengels 12-06-2010 06:48 AM

My DIL gave me a book for Xmas last year with patterns for 'floor quilts' .. you shellack, lacquer or maybe 'mod-pog' the fabric pieces to the floor cloth, trim out the edge, and have a beautiful 'quilt' you can walk on. I haven't made on yet, .... maybe I can't get past the whole... 'walking on a quilt'.......

are they attached to the floor in any way?

yolanda 12-06-2010 06:53 AM

I think they put non-skid stuff on the bottom - I don't think they are attached to the floor.

No, it is just a fancy word for a rug.

vjengels 12-06-2010 01:21 PM

Not that I'm aware of... I'll scan the cover when I get home tonight, it seems like a pretty good idea... I'm not sure if my dog would walk on a rug that had any kind of a sheen to it, she walks around anything laying on the floor

Rosyhf 12-06-2010 01:29 PM

The only floor cloth that I know of, because I used it....is to paint on. Then you bind it and throw it on the floor.

i doubt that they're supposed to look like a quilt. more like a rug for people who couldn't afford a real rug, i'd guess.
