Fluffy Or Stiff QAYG
 

Are all QAYG quilts stiff? Can they be made fluffy? Does it just depend on the batting used? My husband wants a soft fluffy quilt but I'm only able to do qayg. Any suggestions?

Batting type .... and the distance between your QAYG quilting would make the difference between fluffy and stiff!

I agree, usually the denser the quilting, the stiffer the quilt. Also, I don't know what QAYG method you are using, but my favorite is where you use sashing to connect the quilted blocks. This can make the quilt a bit stiffer, but what I've done in the past is not quilt and join every block separately. I make a section of quilt blocks about a yard square, joining the blocks with regular sashing who's width will match the sashing of the QAYG joins. Quilt these large sections, then join as you usually do. This cuts down on the bulkier seams. One yard squares seem to work well for my fmq, but you can make them any size that works for you. Don't know if this helps.

As PPrincess suggests ... there are many different QAYG techniques ... you may want to investigate the different methods and the results they will give.

Batting makes a much bigger impact. I have seen/felt very densely quilted quilts that still had wonderful drape but were very flat (like the kind of old fasioned quilts we think about that are crinkled and very flat). A high loft batting combined with sparse quilting will make for a very "fluffy" quilt. Choose high loft polyester such as fat batt, Quilter's Dream brand Dream Puff, or wool and do simple quilting like SITD as far apart as the batting will allow. Or don't QAYG but complete the entire top, sandwich with one of the above recommended battings and tie the quilt at 3 or 4" intervals. That will give you a look most like a comforter which I consider "fluffy"

Which brings a point ... each person has a different idea of fluffy!

Perhaps MollyOldham needs to find out from Mr.MO what his idea of "soft fluffy" might be.

To get softness ... maybe he'd like minkee both front and back?
