Flying Geese and my Janome Horizon 7700's 1/4 inch foot with edge guide
 

I was reading this thread about methods for making flying geese. I tried the no-waste method (one large square, four small squares) but my stitching was off. Since my 1/4 inch foot has an edge guide, I did the following:

With a special ruler, I positioned it where the center line should be - from corner to corner. Then I drew a line in the openings in the center of the ruler. Then I drew lines on either side of the ruler. This leaves me with a cutting line and stitching lines on either side of the cutting line.

I sewed on the stitching lines using my standard foot, positioning the fabric with the stitching line going under the presser foot right at its center. Probably not the most precise way to do things because my blocks weren't perfectly sized.

OK - long way to get to the question.

Q#1 - My 1/4 inch foot on my old machine had no edge guide. You would run the edge of the foot along the cutting line. As some have done, if I rip off the edge guide from my 1/4 inch foot, what will I get? Will it look like my old 1/4 inch foot?

Q#2 - Have any of you sewn along the cutting line running the edge guide on top of the fabric? If so, did you get an accurate seam? Doesn't seem as if it has the clearance to do so.

That is what I do, I just keep that guide on the line and sew one side, turn around and sew other side, cut in between. But I have only been quilting for about a year so I could be doing it wrong.

Ok, I don't have the Horizon (I have the 6600) but I would not rip the guide. I adjust the needle position slightly to the left or to the right. I wouldn't cut first because the whole point of using this method is to avoid bias edges.
Although I haven't tried this...I saw Debbie Tucker's video on Youtube where she places the small squares slightly inside from the edge (like two threads off on each side). Maybe you could give this a try.

That's how I sew my FG also.

I agree with easypeezy, I would use a foot like the f2 foot and adjust the needle position until you get your 1/4" lined up with the edge of the foot and then make a note of what position it is so you can go back to it easily.
