I'm getting ready to go on a long plane flight in a few weeks. I was thinking of taking some sewing or crocheting with me in my carry on. Does anyone know if needles or crochet hooks are prohibited? Can't really tell on TSA's website.

I would call and ask. My friend just flew to Peru and back and they took her knitting needles, then she saw a flight attendant knitting! Go figure.

Here is the list of prohibited items. Check the day before your flight too, if the security level changes this list can too :wink: If they aren't on the list as prohibited, you should be able to put them in your carryon. I took my scissors out and put them in the open along with my liquids in the baggy :D

I took my 3 1/2" scissors, needles, no problem. I seen plastic knitting needles and crochet hooks on the flights too.

International flights may be different from domestic too.

They are allowed. I take my redwork on the plane because it doesn't take up much room in my bag. I have a ribbon to put around my neck tied to a small pair of scissors and put the floss on a card attached to the ribbon. That way they can't get lost.

You may want to contact your carrier then. Different countries/different rules.

Right after the bombing in Okalahoma City -- Good old Timothy, may he burn in hell, my next trip was a bit more strutured. But I was always to take my tatting shuttles and threads with me. I also hd a very pretty pendant and within the scollops there were tiny blades. The worse damage you do was to possible draw barely a drop of blood and then only if you actually forced it on someone's skin. So I was able to take those items with me. Managed to get some stuff done and ended up giving lessons to two women on the flight. That was fun. Fortunately I was only carrying my super inexpensive shuttles and not the ones that were made for me, so I was able to let each lady take a small ball of thread and a shuttle with her. And then took their addresses and mailed them copies of the beginners book on Tatting. Heard from each of them a couple of times, but then it drifted off, which was fine. I just thought it was sweet that they were interested enough to want to learn.

Just flew internationally to New Zealand via Fiji last June. I checked the TSA website and in one section it said you could take craft supplies such as crochet hooks, and knitting needles. Didn't even mention sewing needles and the airlines were no help, just referred me to the TSA site. I took 1 needle in carry on and my English paper piecing and had no problem. Also took a dental floss container. There is a little cutter thing inside that can cut thread easily. At the time, somewhere I read you couldn't take the pendant type cutters, but don't know if I could have or not. There cost $5-7 and didn't want to waste my money if it were taken away.

This isn't about what sewing things you can take but if you're flying internationally and are on any prescription medicines PLEASE check ahead of time and make sure that they are legal in the countries that you are going to. A friend of mine went to Lithuania a few years ago and had to change 3 of her meds before she went because the drugs she was on could have gotten her arrested and jailed there.

I was also told to make sure I took the meds in the original
prescription bottles and take copies of the scripts. Did so, but had no problem in Fiji or NZ. I am sure that it is different in different countries.

Wow I didn't even think of that. Where would I find that info? I'm going to Portugal
