FMQ Leah Day---Which Designs Have You Used?

I'm looking at the 365 designs she created. I find myself not liking the lined ones as well as curved ones. For some reason they look harder even though I've never tried the straight ones!

What have you discovered?

I ordered her book "365 Free Motion Designs". I have used many of her designs as inspiration for quilting. Usually I quilt the design on a larger scale for a softer feel. I usually do a practice piece of about 12x12 inches to get a feel for thequilting motion and design and see if it "works". If not, the practice piece makes a nice new hot pad or mug rug.

I have not used any of her designs but am going to go order her book right now!

I absolutely love Leah Day's method of instruction, and the number of designs that she has. Her web site is my go to when I want to look at possible designs. She demonstrates how each design is sewn and who could ask for more.

My person preferance is to quilt with about 1 to 2 inches of spaces between the quilting lines as I like the soft feel of quilts. As a result, not all of her designs are compatible with what I prefer, but I have learned so much from her demonstrations, and her quilt alongs that I now somewhat comfortably FMQ. Currently I prefer the curved designs, but have evolved to like and be better at the straight designs, and I am still struggling with accuracy when travelling, but it is coming.

Leah is stretching my ideas of what quilting is. If I keep listening to these young folks, I'll be making art quilts very soon. Wait a minute, many in my family already consider my quilts to be art quilts because they are not always the traditional block with sashing and borders, but I am still not to what I consider to be art quilts. I'm getting there though, so keep those new ideas coming.

You don't have to order the book Mighty. All of her designs are on her blog. I just prefer to have a book to browse and bookmark at my leisure.

I've used quite a few of Leah's designs too. The one I'm most proud of is this lollipop flower pattern I used inside the sun of a batik panel. It's actually the quilt in my avatar. She does inspire you, doesn't she?!

You did a beautiful job on your quilt. Isn't it amazing that Leah is so young and has so much talent. I am finding myself leaning towards art quilts since I have started fmq. Once you get the hang of it, it is very relaxing.
