I have not FMQ'ed anything to give as a gift yet. My practice pieces showed that I was getting pretty good at consistent size stitches---then I turned it over and looked at the back side. Stitches twice as long as the ones on top.
I have a Janome 10001 that sews like a dream for piecing.

What do I need to do to correct this?
Thanks for any info.

Well isnt that odd, never heard of that, are you sure its not eyelashes?

Can you post a pic of the front and the back? I can not imagine how that happen.

Definitely need to see a picture of that. Is it possible your bobbin tension was too high so your bobbin thread is laying on the back giving the appearance of long stitches??

sounds like hand fatigue.. do you wear those wonderful gloves with rubber fingertips? Good luck.

mind burp.. sorry .. re-read the post.

I agree.. tension on top or bottom.. check out the Utubes and free motion quilting.. there are a few great ones that explains tension.

good luck

So like a tension problem. Check the bobbin to make sure it is feeding properly. Sometimes I have to go back and pull the bobbin thread up the proper way.

When that happens to me, it means it's time to give my machine a good cleaning. I remove the throat plate and give the machine a good brushing and vacuuming out. Lint build up/packing causes the bobbin thread to not catch the top thread making the bottom stitches longer than the top stitches.
