I watched this show this morning on the BYU channel and they made a quilt using a serger. It looked like it would be very easy to make and they have the free pattern to download on their website. How many of you use a serger to make quilts and do you prefer it over a traditional sewing machine? Just curious.

The episode no. is 1603 if you are interested in the pattern and instructions.

I pieced together a rail fence once. It was fine, but probably would have been bulky for a hand quilter. Honestly, I would rather use my H/V for piecing.

I've seen this quilt made up, and it's really cute: http://www.babylock.com/ftp/projects...le%20Quilt.pdf

I've used my serger for quilt-as-you-go quilts such as this one: http://www.sewvac1.com/Library/serger_baby_quilt.htm . They're easy and fun, especially for charity or quick gift quilts. A serger doesn't take the place of a regular SM, but I enjoy having options.

I don't have a serger, but have seen some cute things done with them.

I made a small one for a class I was taking. My preference is to use my regular sewing machine for piecing. The serger takes more thread than a regular sewing machine and my serger doesn't have a big sewing area like my regular machine does.

Here is a website about serging a quilt:

There are quite a number of famous quilters that have serged quilts...google it and you will come up with lots of links. Some have been doing this a long time now.
