So one of the things I'm working on is my turn around time! So far if it's anything bigger then a drag around blanket it's taken me 3 years to get it finished and returned to the intended reciepiant! Good thing none are paying customers!

I finally got caught up on the housework and decided to put my sister's quilt on the frame I realized I hadn't sewn the backing fabric up. When I shook out the fabric we had purchased 3 years ago, there was only 2 yards of fabric! My sister's quilt is a queen size quilt!

At least I have an excuse to go to the quilt shop in a neighboring town I've been wanting to check out!

Fabric Aquisition Road Trip

WOW, road trip!

I hardly ever buy my backing fabric because I never know what size it really is going to end up being. I'm one that kinda follows a pattern but not always. have fun!! I also often block my backing by putting some of the front material in blocks into the back.

Now I understand why you don't get your quilting projects done. Housework should never take priority!

I never purchase backing fabric at the same time as project fabric.

I agree, housework is evil. It makes you ugly. lol

I never buy the backing fabric until the front is finished. First of all, you never know just how big the quilt will end up being, and second, what fabric will match the front and compliment it. My LQS has many fabrics in the "Back Room" at a reduced price to pick from. I always look there first. The hard part is picking just one.

We had bought the backing frabic at the same time as the quilt front's becuase my sister lives in Wyoming and at the time I was living in California. I had an easy pattern in mind, and then changed it once I got home and realized I had enough fabric to do the quilt I really wanted to do for her. She wanted to be a part of the process, hence why we bought it all.

I do usually buy my backing fabric at the same time I buy the fabric for the front. I like to buy extra material just in case, and that way my stash stays nice and plump!

Oh I almost forgot, I drove all the way to Hillsboro, about a 30 min drive from my house just to findout the shop is closed on mondays, so not my first choice but I found a nice hotpink flannel at Wal-mart that will now back my sister's quilt!

If that's the case, then I should be drop dead gorgeous....and let me assure you, I am not!...lol

So you have had a design change. What an opportunity.

Sometimes I wait til I finish the top before I buy the backing as I'll change what fabric I want to focus on as I sew.

Other times I just know what will work.

I think you are being creatively flexible.
