I thought I had at least opened and briefly examined every box and container I inherited from my dear mother, but.....last night I opened a container that held this treasure - hundreds and hundreds of 6 inch squares. :shock: :shock: :shock:

The only thing I can think of is she acquired these thru swaps at her quilting guild. There are sooooo many different prints, and I recognize only a few as fabric she had.

This brings me to what I need from you dear friends. As a relatively new quilter I don't have any idea what to do with all these 6 inch squares. I know I can always make a simple scrappy quilt (or many) but are there patterns that start with many, many 6 inch squares?

Also bear in mind I have already spotted a problem with accuracy in some of these squares, so I may end up with many, many 5 inch squares.

Help me make a list of projects.........please!!!

You can use these for different types of blocks.
There are several patterns that you can use these "small pieces"...

Wow! What a nice surprise! You can also cut them into half square triangles and make a scrappy quit with alternating squares and HST-no pattern needed for that. You's get lots of suggestions here-

You can cut them in 5 3/4" squares and make 4-at-a-time flying geese for an easy scrappy quilt. At least that's what I'm doing with mine, also gathered from swaps

Pinwheels. A 5 inch square makes a nice size pinwheel. Check the Moda Bakeshop for patterns using charms - they are 5". I am making a table runner by cutting the 5" blocks in half . I made a Disappearing Nine Patch with charms, too. D4P is another.

First determine what size you need to trim them all to be the same. It does NOT need to be as small as 5", I am sure! --probably 5 3/4" will be enough to square them all up.
You will want a "one-patch" pattern, where all the squares are cut to the same shape, whether half-square rectangles, HS triangles, or something else, because then you don't have different amounts of the squares going into seam allowances.
