I've been working on 12" Churn Dash blocks with a fussy cut center. When I finished the # of blocks, it looked a bit skimpy so I've added a brown frame completely around each block which really makes them pop. Now I want to add the actual frame to the piece to set it off, as well as the border. My question is...Is there a set width they should be? My brown frame is 1-1/2", I thought the cream colored frame should be maybe 2-1/2" and the final brown border maybe 4-1/2". Does this seem excessive or just about right?

That sounds good to me. You can audition it by folding the fabric and laying it beside the quilt center... adjust it until you are happy with the widths :D:D:D

sounds just right to me but I am no expert.

A quilting teacher told me once that borders should be in multiples of the block size, for instance 12" block, you could have 2",4",6" etc. for borders & she preferred to use smaller borders first & work outward to bigger sizes. I have to say that I have not followed this advice consistently, but it's usually in mind when I do the borders.

It sounds wonderful to me. I can't wait to see the quilt.

your measurments are all good
a good (rule-of-thumb) is your borders/sashing/framing strips should be a measurment that divides into the block size equally---all 3 of your measurments do (go-into) your 12" block it would be (odd) if you were trying to use 5"' or 7"...they do not (go into 12") |
i use the scientific method of winging it - aka eyeballing!
trust your instincts.... |
Thank you all! I will test to make sure and then go forward. Also thank you quilterfly & ckcowl for the rules of thumb. I'll try to keep that in mind from now on. I'm learning so much from you all; I love it!! Have a Happy, Blessed Thanksgiving everyone!!
