I am new to quilting and even newer to free motion quilting. Is there any harm in free motion quilting with no presser foot on the machine? I have noticed it would be very easy to get my finger in the way and sew my finger. Other than that it is very to move the fabic to where I want the needle to sew.

My machines do not like sewing without a foot, there is nothing to help hold the fabric down while forming the stitches.
If your machine will work without one, go for it. Just be very careful :D:D:D

i have done alot of free motion embroidery with out a foot Do watch the fingers. Also some machines do better than others and be sure to put the lever for the foot in the down position

it is worth it to get a darning foot than to go without a foot! I have never sewn my fingers and I know you can find plenty of stories of people who have on this forum.

You'll probably have a problem with stitch quality if you don't use a foot. The sewing machine stitch quality is made to have something hold the fabric down, even momentarily while the thread is pulled up through it. That's why a lot of long arm machines have a hopping foot - it only presses down while the needle is going through the fabric and pulling the thread up, not between stitches.
And as you mentioned - the safety factor. Machine needles are not meant to be used surgically!

Needles also bend and break more easily with no foot.

I am glad to know I am not the only one who has a machine that does not like to work as well without the foot ... I thought it was just an operator error LOL
