I made myself a FM slider. Went to Bed Bath & Beyond and purchased a "Chef'splanet Non-stick Ovenliner" It measures 23" x 25", twice as long as purchased sliders. This could be cut in two and either share with a friend or keep as spare. I kept mine large as I have a machine table that lowers my machine. If I find that is is to large I will split in two. I then put the rubberized shelf line on the outside of the slider and around the needle hole, on the bottom side of slider to keep from moving. I have a lap quilt almost ready to FMQ, so I am excited to use it. The price was $19.99, and I had a $5.00 off coupon. The Supreme slider sells for around $30.00 plus shipping. The SewSlip sells for about $27.00 plus shipping and they are half the size.

You are so cool!! I can do this!! {{{hugs to you and your bright ideas!!}}}
GREAT WAY TO SAVE A BUCK!!

SewExtremeSeams 11-04-2010 08:10 AM

Beth, Very clever. I will have to get two: one for my oven didn't even know they made these things; two for FM.

Thanks for the photos also. :-D

amma 11-04-2010 08:25 AM

Clever! Let us know how it works for you :D:D:D

nativetexan 11-04-2010 08:27 AM

Ha! I'm about to buy one for my oven!! i have the supreme slider, so don't necessarily need this for sewing. great idea though.

Yes Carolyn, But this one is twice as big. See you soon!!!

luvspaper 11-04-2010 09:57 AM

Great idea, but how do you deal with having to change bobbins? Does it bend up enough to get underneath it?

(I made a small piece for my machine bed and I have to tape it down and then untape to change. My machine is NOT flush to my table unfortunately)

Lady Crafter 11-04-2010 10:04 AM

Wow!! Nice money saver.

It isn't taped down. That is what the shelf liner is for, it keeps it from moving. It is soft like vinyl and I just lift it up and change my bobbin.

Maggiemay 11-04-2010 10:54 AM

Good idea. I have an old set of Teflon baking sheets & the largest size I rarely use anymore. For what I used it for Reynolds Release works just as well. I'll have to give this a try!

Izaquilter 11-04-2010 04:15 PM

I thought about this & even checked them out on line! How does it work? Is it as slick as the original slider? Can't wait to hear how it works

deedum 11-04-2010 04:40 PM

Wow, this is great! Thanks for your post. I did buy the super slider but it didn't fit so well on my machie and I cut it down and down again, and finally gave up on it. However, it does fit on my little janome now but thinking about trying this again but didn't want to spend the $30 . Yep I might try this!

craftiladi 11-04-2010 05:04 PM

What a clever girl you are and even better for sharing. Please let us know the results and your final opinion.
Just another reason I love this board.

BellaBoo 11-04-2010 05:54 PM

The Slider is super slick. I haven't found anything that slicky to use for a substitute that didn't cost the same or more.

Hi, How are you keeping the rubber mat adhered to the slider?

quilterj 11-04-2010 07:01 PM

I had some vinyl and since my project was same I just cut it big enough for on my machine, cut the hole for the needle and taped it down. I bought a yard of vinyl a while back. It worked for me. But I like your idea better.

I'm sorry. I forgot to mention that I used double sided tape to hold it on.

littlehud 11-04-2010 07:39 PM

What a great idea. You are so creative.

costumegirl 11-04-2010 07:43 PM

Wow!! Great idea!!! Please be sure to let us know how it is working out for you when you FMQ! Thanks for the info! :)

fireworkslover 11-04-2010 07:56 PM

What a great idea. I hope it works as well as the pricey one. Let us know.

Pickles 11-04-2010 08:30 PM

If this works good for you I'll need to get one also even through my machine sets ontop of my sewing table , hope it would work for like mine to. :-D

anicra 11-05-2010 02:11 AM

What a great idea. I have a supreme slider and wish it were a little larger since my machine fits in to my cabinet and the flat sewing surface is larger. Thanks!!

kalady 11-05-2010 03:34 AM

Thank you so much! I am thrilled to know this and thanks for the great pics to go with.

I just want to mention this stuff works fabulous in the oven as well. I work in a commercial kitchen and it sure makes quick work of an oven spill over.

Thanks for a great suggestion and clever idea!! My Supreme Slider has needed replacing for quite a while and I'm anxious to try this. By following your instructions, I can get a larger and even more slippery surface at half the cost!

seleyrn 11-05-2010 03:56 AM

I wanted a table for my Viking machine to make machine quilting a bit less cumbersome, but the cost of the table through Viking was $200. Then at a quilt guild meeting I saw a home made table, this was made of MDF and painted. I enlisted the help of my hubby, and we purchased a piece of plexi glass, and 5 short table legs. Now I have a large table that fits my machine for under $30.00. It it's a bit rough around the edge that fits against the machine, but it serves the purpose. We quilters are quite resourceful aren't we.

quilt3311 11-05-2010 04:41 AM

Thanks for sharing that idea. I have used the oven sheet as a press cloth when doing fusible applique. Found mine at Menards for about $5.

Kathy-Pgh 11-05-2010 04:46 AM

Very clever. Amazing what quilters will discover. thanks for sharing

I would get me a roll of that tape the guys use for furnace vents and put it on the rough edges, if the edge is thick enough to use it like that.

Thanks for that little tip. I will have to have another one now!!! By the way, they had one that was $9.99 that was a little thinner. I think I'll get this one for the applique mat... Then I can use another 20% off coupon. They will even take the outdated coupons at ours.

Roberta 11-05-2010 06:05 AM

What a great idea. Our local Christmas Tree Shop sells these for under $10. I have one in my oven but will pick another up next time I'm down there.

Marilyn1 11-05-2010 06:06 AM

What a wonderful idea. You are the best.

dphelps 11-05-2010 06:23 AM

Seleym - You can sand down those rough edges on your table by just using a hand (palm)sander.Featherweight, what a great idea. Thanks

mhansen6 11-05-2010 06:26 AM

I ordered the Supreme Slider two days ago. I wish I had waited. This sound so much better. I may go out and buy this anyway.

IBQUILTIN 11-05-2010 06:41 AM

Quilters are a special bunch of frugal gals and guys. Now you can use the leftover cash for stash. great tip Thanxx

Same here. I think the size and slide potential of the supreme slider are excellent, and the under side is tacky enough that it doesn't need any thing else to hold it in place if your machine bed is clean. Glad you found something that works for you tho,. :)

deebee 11-05-2010 06:48 AM

You ladies are full of creative ideas and solutions! Thanks for the tips!

janb 11-05-2010 07:10 AM
