Freezer paper left in applique?
 

We recently had a wonderful needle turn appliquer come talk to our guild. It got me curious about applique (I've only ever done it by machine, and never anything intricate) so I started research various methods.

It seems a number of methods involve glue basting TO freezer paper. The freezer paper doesn't get removed.

How do you do your applique? If you leave the freezer paper in, can the quilt be washed? Is freezer paper acid free, or does it effect the quilt over time?

I always remove the freezer paper. I usually have it on top when I use it, so it's not a big deal, but if perchance I have it inside, I cut the background away and remove the paper then. If it's glued down, you can also soak the block to loosen the glue.

I took a class on this and the freezer paper was always removed, either before you sewed the applique down, or after by cutting a small slit in the back of the quilt. Depended on the shape of the applique which method was used.

This method doesn't use glue basting. It removes the freezer paper. I was just really surprised to see the woman glue to the freezer paper. I thought most people removed it.

I haven't ever seen it stitched in. I was always taught to remove it.

I used to use a dab of glue to hold the piece in place as I appliqued it down, then cut the back and pull the paper out. I quit doing it that way. I use the freezer paper to cut templates, iron them to my fabric, trace around them with a fine mechanical pencil then remove the paper. I dab glue to the applique piece and needle turn. Each paper template can be used till it wears out.

Beth Ferrier has washable freezer paper. You leave it in and it washes out. A little pricey but... so much easier.

I use a modified Karen Kay Buckley method - I use double freezer paper - iron to fabric - cut out with a 1/4 or 1/8 seam allowance - paint on magic sizing or best press on the seam allowance then iron the edge down ( drys the magic sizing) then remove the freezer paper and the fabric keeps it shape. KK Buckley use templar which last for ever but doesn't stick to the fabric - the other tip I have if using her method is get a needle nose tweezer a real fingar saver when using an iron.
