Fun Quilt Idea?

So I was thinking. I know, scary. What if you had a bunch of squares and/or HST, threw them up un the air, then straightened into rows where they land and sewed then into a quilt with reckless abandon?

I don't like scrappy, but I an thinking about trying this.

tesspug 09-26-2012 10:28 PM

Why not. Sounds like fun anyway.

Peckish 09-26-2012 10:30 PM

Very similar to the paper bag method, where you toss everything in a paper bag, shake it up, then whatever you pull out is what you use.

busy fingers 09-27-2012 12:07 AM

Nothing ventured.... nothing gained. Keep us posted if you decide to go for it.

nycquilter 09-27-2012 03:40 AM

what have you got to lose if you try this? a few minutes of your time? go for it. Even if you don't love it, I'm sure someone will (not being sarcastic). Sounds like a fun experiment.

QuiltnNan 09-27-2012 03:43 AM

i'd love to see the results

Joset 09-27-2012 03:56 AM

oh i think it would be neat. i like scapy.

kateyb 09-27-2012 05:32 AM

I do the paper bag for my string quilts. I have noticed that there are a lot of whites and blacks in the bags. May take them out and just do a black and white quilt. I just may throw the HST's I'm making and see what happens. It could be very liberating. Someone who is OCD may have trouble doing that.

knlsmith 09-27-2012 07:34 AM

I definitely have a strong touch of OCD. LOL. That's why throwing up unstead of using the bag technique is the challenge part. It will a while for me to try. I have a customer quilt and 2 other projects to do first. :)

I am hopeless at scrappy quilts. I try the just grab and sew method but when I put two pieces under the needle that scream " clash" to me, I can't resist reaching for a better match. Good luck!

MattieMae 09-27-2012 07:44 AM

Chaos can be pretty and interesting.

Which is really too bad because those clashes can really make a scrappy quilt sing.

I am working on that right now. I am doing 5-1/2" squares and doing them from two bags - dark and light. I do not have two squares alike and I am making 187 squares. Eleven across 17 down. That is the fun part. So I take one dark, then one light, etc., pin them together and make a row, and on and on. I can't wait until it is done. It is going to be the backing on a child's quilt with fun stuff on the squares for them to look at! A little more time consuming, but it sure does use up the stash fast. I don't save anything under 2-1/2" so I do have a lot to make 5-1/2" squares.

Have fun! Edie

You can always do what I do....I lay my blocks out on the floor in a pleasing manner, then my Great Dane comes over and rearranges them for me, and that's the way I sew them.:D

Beckster 09-28-2012 04:35 AM

Actually, I think that sounds like fun. Too many projects ahead of it though, but some day.....

annthreecats 09-28-2012 07:03 AM

That's almost the same way I made the quilt in my avatar. I wanted it to look old fashioned and scrappy and that's exactly what I got. It is being well loved by a cousin in NY now.

Janice Thompson 09-28-2012 07:39 AM

Its got so that I only like to do scrappy quilts. The traditional quilts are beautiful but I have fallen in love with the scrappy. Maybe its because I'm over run with scraps. Please post after to assemble the tossed quilt...I may try this if it's successful....

milikaa1 09-28-2012 07:59 AM

I think that is a great idea!

batikmystique 09-28-2012 08:01 AM

LOL...I am the same way! I LOVE scrappy quilts but can't do one to save my life. Funny though, when I see someone else's scrappy quilt I can find many "clashing" pieces that I would have never have thought to put next to each other. But looking at their quilt overall, it works. Still can't figure that one out. If I did a scrappy quilt, I would need a fellow Quilter at my side forcing me to sew the clashing pieces together...ha! Hmmm...maybe really committing to do a quilt with the grab and sew method might help me overcome my OCD...could be liberating!!! :-)

I loved mine. I made a double sided quilt for a friend where the focal color was the same on both sides. But there still seemed to be thousands of those 4 inch combo's left over. They actually made the perfect size lap quilt for the same lady-

Me too, can't put two 'uglies' together. but I've had some interesting results! Have fun, don't overthink it (my issue for sure).

Imakequilts 09-28-2012 09:20 AM

I make my scrap quilts this way:
Cut squares of newspaper the size I want the squares. Starting at the center, I pin whatever material I grab out of the box onto the paper pattern. The next piece is placed wherever on the first one. After folding over the seam width, I top stitch the piece onto the first piece. Tear the paper away under that piece and cut away the extra fabric underneath. Continue until the paper is covered. Cut your new square of material around the paper pattern and remove the rest of the paper. From the wrong side you can clip away any extra left hanging.

mea12 09-28-2012 09:45 AM

knowing me, i'd cheat and defeat the whole purpose. in fact, that would probably be virtually impossible for me to do! i sometimes think i quilt bc it IS something i can control ...at least i sure try to, but with varying results.

Same here. So I think the toss in the air would work better (but I'd probably end up doing a little rearranging).

trolleystation 09-28-2012 10:52 AM

I'd like to see an action photo of the squares being tossed........

miriam 09-28-2012 10:56 AM

You know if you do that and hate it you just cut it up and resew it into a different shape...

QM 09-28-2012 11:05 AM

I am much too compulsive to do that.

ube quilting 09-28-2012 11:08 AM

Go for it!
peace

mcgeeca 09-28-2012 03:44 PM

This sounds like something I would definitely like to try. Thanks for the great idea!
I like a little disorder. Makes quilting a little more enjoyable for me. :)

1screech 09-28-2012 05:45 PM

Cannot wait to see it.

I know what you mean. I have tried scrap quilts a couple of times and it just doesn't work for me. I just really want those pieces to match!! I think I'm just too left-brained... which is why I pretty much stick to traditional quilt blocks... But I love the idea of just tossing them all in the air and let them fall where they may!!
