The Joann interfacing you purchased is for general sewing. It's not what you need for applique. Steam a Seam is the correct type.

There are applique patterns that use the interfacing you mentioned, check Eleanor Burns site. However if you want it fused to design and to background you need one of the fusibles mentioned in the above posts.

You can use the fusible interfacing for your medium to large applique pieces. Eleanor Burns show the method in many of her patterns.
Yor sew with a small seam allowance around the outsides of the piece , withe the fusible side facing the right side of the fabric piece. Clip th curves and turn it right side out. That puts the fusible on the proper side and leaves the edges of the applique nicely turned under for sewing, after the piece is ironed into position.

ask for paper backed fusable and the sales person should be able to steer you in the right direction. wonder under from pellon is a popular one along with steam a seam, heat n bond lite, misty fuse, stitch witchery, and i'm sure there are more, just let them know you want fusable web...not interfacing.

I love applique, and have used alot of steam a seam lite...recently though I discovered the gluestick. So much less time and cutting, run a dry iron over it and it bonds great...cheaper too:>)

Eleanor Burns uses this for applique. It is not for raw edged applique though :D:D:D

I tried some Misty Fuse and it smeared out from under the fabric I was appliqueing. I must have wiggled the iron instead of just pressing down. What a mess. I am so thankful I was using my teflon sheet!

I use WonderUnder and buy it by the bolt. It is usually cheaper. If I need to hand quilt then I use Misty Fuse which is more expensive. All personal choice. We used to use the interfacing before they made the fusible webs to keep the edges from raveling as much!

I like Misty Fuse, so far it has stayed soft.

I've used Wonder Under and Heat & Bond Lite. The Wonder Under seems to be softer afterwards. I did have a problem with the adhesive separating from the applique once, but I think I had just ironed it wrong. I had no problems the 2nd time I used it.
