Glue for binding
The thread about the quilt police has been closed (good) but I think it closed before it was discussed about the type of glue to be used. It is Elmers SCHOOL glue only. I bought the tips through Sharon's daughters website and the tips are plastic. I really don't like them because the tip itself is not fused to the rest of the tip and if you press too hard on the tip it pushes down into the bottle. The other day I found a really neat solution at Walmart. It is the school glue in a pen form. You can adjust the stream and the pen is small enough to hold easily and I am thinking it can be refilled. I have switched over to glue only for bindings and also have received many accolades from judges about the bindings, especially the mitered corners. There are several competition quilters in my area and after talking to them, glue is their best kept secret. This is not a quicker method at all, but it sure gives great results. Sharon's you tube is either in 3 parts or there is one that is the entire process on one video. Before I found the glue pen and after having nasty results with the plastic tip, I just used the bottle of glue and adjusted the tip for a fine stream. I think if I am doing binding on a quilt that I really don't want to put a lot of time in and have no intentions to putting it into a competition, then I would just use the standard method and whiz through it. Otherwise, its school glue for me!! One other tip for using the glue, heating with the iron is essential so the glue doesn't get hard. Just follow Sharon's directions and don't skip the heat part.

A little puzzled...are you stitching after gluing or just gluing the binding?

Thanks. I was the one that posted the question and just came back to find the answer:) I'll look for that pen. I am about to try glueing it....I like the method because I won't have to pin...I have RA and pinning hurts and takes quite a while. I guess I can use clips but I want to try the glue method first. I like her YouTube video on this...it deals with many tips that help with getting great corners. I did buy the normal tip washable glue so I will try that today. Have to finish up some presents:(

mY philosophy is whatever works to achieve the desired results.
However, I always wonder why the need to pin or clip binding. I never do and still get the results I want. For me, gluing just takes unnecessary time. |
I use a glue stick - Elmers and Love it!!!! no issue with the needle. Once I sew on the binding I flip the binding, glue and iron do of the binding on the quilt. Then I bring it to the sewing machine and sew it on the front side a long decorative stitch. Binding comes out great!! So much easier. The glue washes out in the wash.

I got the metal tips (with empty bottles) at JoAnns in the craft section. Those small tubes work really well!
With my bad hands, gluing really helps hold all kinds of stuff for me. |
I use empty printer ink refill squeezy bottles. The ink washes out with hot water. They have a long tiny nozzle and easy to fill. I can get one teeny drop of glue or a long thin line. I am a big fan of glue basting with Elmer's School Glue. I use it for binding a lot. I make a lot of small quilted things (wall hangings, purses) & I glue baste my sandwiches before quilting too. I just made my husband a shirt & the McCalls pattern suggested glue basting in one of the steps!

Thanks for the web site again. I have used the glue and love it but didn't realize it needed pressing with a warm iron.
