Gonna buy a Featherweight. . .maybe!
 

I wandered some junk and antique stores today. At one antique store, they had a featherweight. It appeared to be in good condition. The decals were almost perfect, not a lot of wear showing on the bed. I did notice that it was missing the bobbin case and it will require new wiring from the machine to the original foot pedal. No manual or case but a box of numerous attachments/feet.


The guy at the shop didn't know anything about the machine and couldn't tell me what year it was. I couldn't find the serial number. Can someone tell me where I can find this on a FW?

I think it has been at the shop for a while. It started out at $350, then was discounted to $275. It now has a sticker on it for $150.

Now, is this machine worth $150? Is it possible to find a replacement bobbin case and will it be costly to switch out the electrical cord?

The serial number on the FW's are on the bottom. Has 2 letters followed by 6 numbers.

Hi, I have a FW. DH bought it from Jean S. Lyle, he and his wife have a booth at most of the big shows.
I pulled out the parts list which lists all parts that can be replaced and a new bobbin case is $45. This price list is 2 years old. If you would like more info private message me and I would be happy to email you a copy of the list.

I love my FW, but please be informed about the cost of bringing it up to speed, it could be more trouble than it is worth.

personally i would keep looking- a featherweight without the case?
the case is a big part of the (appeal) of a featherweight.
if you are patient you will find the perfect one

The wiring you described is very basic and a pretty easy fix. An original, vintage bobbin case will cost you up to $50 plus shipping. Bobbin case copies are less, but not as reliable as they're made in China. If it were me, I'd feel comfortable offering $100 but I would tackle the wiring myself no problem. If you have to pay someone $50-$75 to do it for you, you'll have to ponder if it's worth it to you.
