I'm planning way ahead because it will probably take me at least a year to make. My grandson is graduating next year (high school) and I had an idea that I could make him a quilt for graduation. I have only made a couple of quilts so far and am working on a couple of others, so I need a fairly easy idea.

A little about GS - He is an Electrical major at a Vo Tech school. Loves Wrestling - 3rd in district - also plays soccer. He has played baseball, though not for school.
I was trying to find a way to tie these thing together, but they're not related and don't have an idea. I can see a sports theme, OR maybe an electric theme, but don't ever remember seeing fabric for that. Come to think of it, I've seen a lot of sports fabric, but not wrestling.
I also would like to work in his school colors somehow and maybe school name and graduation year, guess I could make that as a label.
Maybe I need to settle on one theme?

This was my brainstorm while waiting to fall asleep last night, so I'm just forming this idea now and I'm kind of rambling, sorry. All ideas are appreciated.

I recently made a graduation quilt for my niece to take to college. Used her favorite colors, made album blocks for each family member to add a message, added photos of the family to tuck her in at night.

On the back I pieced blocks with photos of her different activities during her life, starting with a baby picture, through high school.

I left spaces for friends and relatives to add their messages on the back at her graduation party.

It was a huge success, she loved it.

I see A picture quilt of him and things he has done. You can buy fabric you can print on. Watch lable and make sure it can be washed, some are dry clean only, some you print on then iron it on the fabric. I use the fabric kind you wash. Made Gd one of her 12 years of school.
my DD is making one now for a person and its for family reunion.

I think you need a memory quilt with a block for each thing you have mentioned. Your sashing and borders could be school colors. Maybe use t shirts for sports squares.

Thanks for these ideas. I'll have to look for the different labels, I've only made one and I just wrote with perm marker, washed it and sewed it on. Good tip on dry cleaning.
QUILTINGAZ, I thought of the Tshirts, not sure if he's willing to give any up to be cut up, have to talk to DD. Never thought of using the colors for sashing, that would work great, maybe for the borders too.

How about an Attic Window Quilt with all the sports, etc. in each window? Made one for my Grandson and he loves it!

I don't think I have enough experience to attack the photos and picture thing, but thinking about the backing and I really like the idea of a solid backing and having people sign it at party. Would I just use a fine tip permanent marker? One of his colors is Gold, maybe use that for back if it's not too bright.
I'll have to look up the Attic Window pattern, since I'm fairly new I don't know many patterns by name.

Thanks all

One of the popular things with my family is a T-shirt quilt with the school colors on it.

PeggyinNO had the coolest graduation quilt. It might not suit your grandson but take a look anyway. It's wonderful.

Tshirt quilts are the neatest. Check those ideas out. :)
