Grandmother's Flower Garden/Hexies...wash-out stabilizer??
 

Inspired by the latest issue of Quilts Japan, I am about to teach myself how to make the wee hexagons for Grandmother's Flower Garden blocks. I read in one blog (http://quiltjane.blogspot.com/2011/0...om-marina.html) that you can use Floriani Stitch and Wash instead of the usual cardstock templates.

Has anyone tried this and if so, how did it work out for you?

I just saw a program on Gyleen Fitzgerald. She showed how to do them without the papers. The way she manipulated the material, it looked so easy.

I did a full size GFG using the plastic templates called Quilt Patis. They are expensive but they work so easily. I ran out even after buying two packages so I made them myself. Just a thought.... Washing out stabilizer sounds a LOT better than trying to remove ALL THAT paper !!!

I've never tried it but sounds interesting. I just use cardboard templates that are reusable.

I am finding that my papers are easiy to remove.....is would be afraid the washable stabilizer would get caught up in the seam allowances. But I am making one inch hexes...... I need to put on borders still...but I am close to having my top done!

I use card stock and print them off on my computer. I am making a 3/4in. hexie. I love it at night watching TV. It cut my strips about 2 1/4 inches so that I have enough to wrap around the cardboard. Then after stiching I trim the backs to about 1/4 in and remove the paper. I then sew them together. I know some that leave the cardboard in until they stich them together. Either way it works.

I made a GFG and used the freezer paper method.......after I put it all together I simply turned it over and pulled all those papers....no problem.....by doing that I knew I was finished with that challenge!!!!!!

I have used both freezer paper and precut papers for different projects. I like the freezer paper method better, but make sure you use quilters freezer paper. A friend used grocery store freezer paper. She left the paper on for awhile before removing and it changed the color of her fabric. She thinks because the grocery store brand wasn't acid free. I made a queen size GFG using quilters brand, left papers on for a couple of years and no color change. Maybe if you removed the grocery brand right away there might not be a problem.
