...holding my quilt sandwhich together and guide it on my DSM? The one I have is 14" round...the throat of my machine is only 6 1/2" so I would have to move it quite a bit.

I don't know - never tried it.

try on a scrap sample

Not sure if an embroidery hoop could accomodate all the layers of backing, batting and top. They are made to only accomodate one layer of fabric. There is no reason you can't try but I suspect it may become an effort in frustration getting the outer hoop to fit over all those layers and the inner hoop and because it is such a tight fit you may stretch and distort the top or back or tear your batting in the process. I would experiment with some scraps first.

However they do make hoops like that specifically for FMQ. Some find them a great help and others find them a hindrence. If you want to try it with a cheaper quilting lap hoop JoAnnes carries a very inexpensive all wood one in several sizes with the tightening screw and wing nut but you need to see what your clearance is when the needle and presser foot are complete raised. The hoop may be too wide to slip under without some fenagling.

ETA, when you do FMQ with a hoop on your machine you would want to have it upside down so the lip of the hoop is facing up.

Thanks I think I will try it....on scraps first.

I will only have two layers...one fleece, and one cotton...hopefully it won't be too thick.

Fleece is stretchy, and if you are repeatedly hooping it, it may stretch out of shape... just a thought :D:D:D

Those hoops are too small to really quilt with. You really just need some gloves and a Supreme Slider on a lowered into the table machine.

I tried it on my Quilter's Dream, doesn't work, but try it and if it works for you, great.

Thanks everyone. I may just have to do this by hand...I have until the end of July, and it's a lap quilt.
